H ERE is no species of poetry

that has occasioned so many criticisms, and given rise to such a multitude of rules, as tragedy; nor any point in literature about which opinions are more divided. This has been the case from Aristotle to Voltaire ; and amongst such an infinity of critics, few have done any real service to the subject of their Vol. III.
