THE Meditations now published under the Title of DAILY BREAD, consist of a few Discourses, in part delivered at the weekly Morning Service of the Mass, in St. Barnabas Cathedral, Nottingham. They were necessarily short, not to interfere with the worldly callings of those who attended. It was desired that these might take away something to keep in mind, in their various occupations, with their families, and throughout the day: something to aid them, by the Divine. Blessing, to fulfil the Apostles' exhortation: Building yourselves upon your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost; keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto life everlasting.

They are published, confessedly also, with a hope that some who read them may prayerfully remember, when it shall please God to close his earthly pilgrimage, him who in the few last years of a protracted life, helped others to minister to them the Word of God, and the Sacraments of the Church.

Their friend and servant,

RICHARD WALDO SIBTHORP.

East Circus Street, Nottingham,

January, 1876.

N.B.-The quotations from Holy Scripture are, with scarcely an exception, from the authorized Douay version of the Bible.

"DAILY BREAD."

1.

T is well to remember each morning that your Heavenly Father is now calling you to your lawful employment, whatever it be. For you are the people of his hand and the sheep of his pasture. Therefore go forth in dependence upon His loving guidance, watchful care, and sustaining help-expect His blessing. Look to Him, that your souls may be somewhat more filled this day with His grace, and your spirits refreshed with a sufficiency of the peace of God. Not only enter on it, but continue, in prayer; As you have time and opportunity, meditate on useful and holy things. Seek to hear edifying words, and nourish profitable thoughts in your hearts; desire a clearer apprehension of God, His character, truth, and love to you in Christ; nor be cast down if it is otherwise, but expect a more unclouded and lightsome to-morrow. Keep faith and hope in exercise. Offer yourselves to God, with cheerful submissiveness of heart, to be both as to soul and body a living sacrifice, mindful of what the Church daily reminds that you are not only the Lord's servants, but likewise

you,
