1. Give thanks to God most high, The u-ni-ver-sal Lord, The sovereign King of kings; And

[graphic][subsumed][merged small][merged small][merged small]

3. He saw the nations lie

All perishing in sin;
And pitied the sad state

The ruined world was in:

Thy mercy, Lord! shall still endure: And ever sure abides Thy word.

4. He sent His only Son

To save us from our woe,
From Satan, sin, and death,
And every hurtful foe:

His power and grace are still the same:
And let His name have endless praise.

5. Give thanks aloud to God,

To God, the heavenly King;
And let the spacious earth

His works and glories sing: Thy mercy, Lord! shall still endure; And ever sure abides Thy word.

WATTS.

171. H. M.

1. IN sweet exalted strains,
The King of glory praise;
O'er heaven and earth He reigns,
Through everlasting days:
He, at His will the world controls,
Sustains or sinks the distant poles.
2. To earth He bends His throne-
His throne of grace divine;
Wide is his bounty known,

And wide His glories shine:
Fair Salem, still His chosen rest,
Is with His smiles and presence blest.

172. H. M.

1. THE promises I sing,

B. FRANCIS.

Which sovereign love hath spoke;
Nor will th' eternal King

His words of grace revoke:
They stand secure and steadfast still;
Nor Zion's hill abides so sure.

2. The mountains melt away,

When once the Judge appears;
And sun and moon decay

That measure mortal years;
But still the same, in radiant lines,
The promise shines through all the flame,

3. Their harmony shall sound

Through my attentive ears,
When thunders cleave the ground
And dissipate the spheres;
'Mid all the shock of that dread scene,
I stand serene-Thy word my rock.

1. GOD is the refuge of His saints
When storms of sharp distress invade;
Ere we can offer our complaints,
Behold Him present with His aid.

8. Let mountains from their seats be hurled
Down to the deep, and buried there,
Convulsions shake the solid world-
Our faith shall never yield to fear.

3. Loud may the troubled ocean roar;
In sacred peace our souls abide;
While every nation, every shore,
Trembles and dreads the swelling tide.

There is a stream whose gentle flow
Supplies the city of our God,
Life, love, and joy, still gliding through,
And watering our divine abode.

5. That sacred stream, Thine holy word,
Our grief allays, our fear controls;
Sweet peace Thy promises afford,
And give new strength to fainting souls.

6. Zion enjoys her Monarch's love,

Secure against a threatening hour;
Nor can her firm foundation move,
Built on His truth, and armed with
power.

174. L. M.

1. Up to the hills I lift mino eyes,
Th' eternal hills beyond the skies;
Thence all her help my soul derives,
There my Almighty refuge lives.

2. He lives-tho everlasting God
That built the world, that spread the flood;
The heavens with all their hosts He made
And the dark regions of the dead.

3. He guides our feet, he guards our way;
His morning smiles bless all the day:
He spreads the evening vail, and keeps
The silent hours, while Israel sleeps.

4. Israel, a name divinely blest,

May rise secure, securely rest;
Thy holy guardian's wakeful eyes
Admit no slumber, nor surprise.

5. No sun shall smite thy head by day;
Nor the pale moon with sickly ray
Shall blast thy couch; no baleful star
Dart his malignant fire so far.

6. Should earth and hell with malice burn,
Still thou shalt go, and still return,
Safe in the Lord; His heavenly care
Defends thy life from every snare.

7. On thee foul spirits have no power;
And, in thy last departing hour,
Angels, that trace the airy road,
Shall bear thee homeward to thy God.

2. Let not Thy face be hid from me,
Nor frown my soul away;

God of my life! I fly to Thee
In a distressing day.

3. Should friends and kindred, near and dear, Leave me to want, or die;

My God would make my life His care,
And all my need supply.

4. My fainting flesh had died with grief,
Had not my soul believed

To see Thy grace provide relief-
Nor was my hope deceived.

5. Wait on the Lord, ye trembling saints!
And keep your courage up:

He'll raise your spirit when it faints,
And far exceed your hope.
