"For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope." Romans 15. 4.

[ocr errors]

If this little book should be found in any degree to supply a real want; if it should help, however poorly and inefficiently, to throw a light upon the exceeding beauty of God's Word in the Book of Genesis and the varied lessons to be drawn from the characters placed before us; if it should put within the reach of the unlearned and the poor, in a simple form, thoughts and explanations from Commentators whose books are out of their power to obtain, and who have not the time for research, even if they could obtain them; if it should be thought worthy of a place, as a Text Book, in some of those Schools where the Old Testament is but little read, then will it not have been labour spent in vain.

It can claim for itself no more than that it has been begun, continued, and ended in the love and fear of God, and with constant prayer for His guidance.

The warm approval of several valued friends, and of very many-not personally known to me-in the educational world, has encouraged me so far to persevere.

I can have no greater reward than that those who may approve may "God speed" in continuing the work; and I shall be grateful for any kindly criticism or advice.

bid me

H. M. CLIFFORD,

Late Hon. Chaplain to St. Peter's Hospital, Covent Garden.
