Bush, Rev. George: Life of Mohammed.

New-York, 1830. 18mo.

(Family Library.)

The main original authority for the life of Mohammed is Abulfeda, who lived, however, 600 years after him. In English, there is a life by Prideaux, London, 1723, Svo; that by Sale, prefixed to his Koran; and, in French, a very good life by Savary.

Cabot, Sebastian: Memoirs, with a Review of the History of Maritime Discovery, illustrated by Documents from the Rolls, now first published. Philadelphia, 1831. 8vo.

Caldwell, Dr. Charles: Memoirs of the Life and Campaigns of Major General Nathaniel Greene. Philadelphia, 1819. 8vo. Campbell, Dr. John, and others: Lives of the British Admirals; containing an accurate Naval History, from the Earliest Period; continued to 1779, by Dr. Berkenhout; to 1780, by H. R. Yorke; and to 1816, by Wm. Stevenson. London, 1818. 8 vols. 8vo.

: British Admirals: the Naval History of Great Britain, with the Lives of the most Illustrious British Admirals, from the Reign of Queen Elizabeth, including the great Events of the Present War. London, 1758. 4 vols. 12mo.

This is an earlier anonymous edition of the same work. Dr. Campbell, besides a great multiplicity of miscellaneous productions, bore a large part in those two great literary undertakings, "The Biographia Britannica," and "the Modern Universal History." In the latter, he was associated with Psalmanazar, Sale, Hooke, and others. That singular piece of learned pleasantry, the "Hermippus Redivivus," is also his.

Campbell, Isabella, of Scotland: A Memoir of her Life, &c. By an American Clergyman. New-York, 1830. 12mo. Carmichael: A Memoir of the Life and Philosophy of Spurzheim. Boston, 1833. 12mo.

Caraccioli, Charles: Memoirs of the Life of Robert, Lord Clive, wherein are impartially delineated his Military Talents in the Field and his Maxims of Government in the Cabinet during the two last Wars in the East Indies, which made him Arbiter of Empire, and the Richest Subject in Europe, with Anecdotes of his Private Life, and the particular Circumstances of his Death, &c. London. 4 vols. 8vo.

Cavendish, George: Life of Cardinal Wolsey. London, 1825. 2 vols. 8vo.

This edition by Singer includes Joseph Hunter's inquiry as to the authorship of the book. Cavendish was gentleman usher to Wolsey. The life is very highly esteemed. There is another by Fiddes, London, 1724, folio, voluminous

and dull; one by John Galt, London, 1818, 8vo, of little worth; another by Grove, London, 1724, 4 vols. 8vo; and another by Thomas Storer, lately reprinted at Oxford in 8vo. For it, see Retrospective Review, vol. V., p. 275. Chalmers, George: Life of Mary, Queen of Scots, drawn from the

State Papers. Philadelphia, 1822. 2 vols. 8vo.

This is the first strong defence of Mary. Those of Miss Benger and Bell are largely drawn from it. Buchanan is the original contemporaneous authority Jebb, Laing, upon which her accusers rely. Him Robertson has followed. Tytler, Hugh Campbell, and many others have discussed the question of her guilt or innocence. James Anderson published, Edinburgh, 1727, 8, 4 vols. 4to, a collection of the documents relating to her.

Bell, Henry G.: Life of the same. (Family Library.) NewYork, 1831. 2 vols. 18mo.

Of Penn, there is an edition of the collected Works, London, 1726, 2 vols. folio ; and another of his Select Works, London, 1782, 5 vols. 8vo. Of the latter there is a subsequent reprint.

Read before the Philosophical Society of New-York: comprising some Account of the Invention, Progress, and Establishment of Steamboats, of Improvements in the Construction and Navigation of Canals, and other Objects of Public Utility. NewYork, 1817. 8vo.

Collier, Jeremy: The great Historical, Geographical, Genealogical, and Poetical Dictionary. London, 1701. 4 vols. folio. This is a translation of Moreri's Great Historical Dictionary, with additions, by Collier, the nonjuring divine; who is remarkable for the reform he accomplished of that license of the stage which prevailed under Charles II. His adversaries, in this contest, were Dryden, D'Urfey, Congreve, and Vanburg. For Moreri, see General Dictionary, below.

Cortes, Hernan, Life of.

Polygraphs.

Constable's Miscellany, vol. 49,

Clerc, John le: Lives of the Primitive Fathers. From the French. London, 1701. 12mo.

This is, I suppose, an abridgment from his "Historia Ecclesiastica duorum primorum sæculorum." The two works of William Cave, his "Apostolici"

(London, 1677, folio) and his "Ecclesiastici" (London, 1683, folio), contain the Lives of the Apostles and Fathers for the first four centuries.

8vo.

Cooke, George Wingrove: Memoirs of Lord Bolingbroke. London, 1836. 2 vols. 8vo.

Besides the life by Mallet (his literary executor) there is one by Goldsmith, prefixed to an edition of Bolingbroke's works, reissued in London, 1809. 8 vols. 8vo.

Crabbe, George, A.M.: Life of the Rev. George Crabbe (the Poet), with his Letters and Journals. By his Son. Philadelphia, 1835. 2 vols. 12mo.

Crockett, David: A Narrative of his Life, written by himself. Philadelphia, 1834. 12mo.

This is, no doubt, purely supposititious, or fabricated from the personal relations of this very ignorant and very dull man; who won much notoriety, by dint of having a greater degree of mere rudeness than is common even in a member of Congress. Falling, however, in defending, to the last, the Texan fortress of Alamo, he merited, in his death, the honours which his life had far less justly enjoyed.

Sketches and Eccentricities of David Crockett. New-York, 1833. 12mo.

Exploits and Adventures of David Crockett in Texas. Philadelphia, 1836. 12mo.

Crockett, David: Life of Martin Van Buren. 2 vols. 12mo.
Pseudonymous.

Holland, Wm. M.: Life and Opinions of the same. 1835. 12mo.
Crusius, Lewis: Lives of the Roman Poets; containing a Critical

and Historical Account of them and their Writings, with large Quotations of their most Celebrated Passages, as far as was necessary to Compare and Illustrate their Several Excellences, as well as to discover wherein they were Deficient; to which is added, a Chronological Table, &c. London, 1733. 2 vols. 12mo.

Esteemed, as is also the old, but solid book of Gerard Voss, "De Poetis Latinis et Græcis." Amsterdam, 1634. 4to. Sir Thomas Pope Blount's "Remarks on Poetry," London, 1694, 4to, contains, also, a very judicious view

of the Latin and other poets. Schoel's "Histoire de la Littérature Romaine," Paris, 1815, 4 vols. 8vo, and Dunlap's "History of Roman Literature," London, 1823, 4, 3 vols. 8vo, are the best late books. The first part of Tiraboschi's "Storia della Litteratura Italiana" gives a view of the Latin writers, and the earlier volumes of La Harpe's "Lycée," of the Latin and Greek ones. Cummings, Asa: Memoirs of the Life of Edward Payson. Boston, 1830. 12mo.

Cunningham, Allen: Lives of the most Eminent British Painters and Sculptors. (Family Library.) New-York, 1831. 5 vols. 18mo.

Dallas, R. C. Recollections of Lord Byron. Philadelphia, 1825. 8vo.

Davis, Matthew L.: Life of Aaron Burr. New-York, 1836. 2 vols. 8vo.

Davy, John, M.D.: Memoirs of the Life of his Brother, Sir Humphrey Davy. London, 1836. 2 vols. 8vo.

There is another life of the same date and size by Paris. Dawson, Moses: Historical Narrative of the Services, &c., of Major-General W. H. Harrison. Cincinnati, 1824. 8vo. Dermoncourt, General: The Duchess of Berri in La Vendée : comprising a Narrative of her Adventures, with her Private Papers and Secret Correspondence. Philadelphia, 1833. 12mo. Digby, Sir Kenelm: Private Memoirs, written by himself; with an Introductory Memoir. London, 1827.

This singular autobiography is written in the form of a romance. A key to the characters is given by the editor, who is Nicholas Harris Nicholas, Esq. There was printed apart, but not published, 50 pages of Castrations. Dobson, Mrs. Life of Petrarch. Philadelphia, 1817. 8vo.

This is chiefly reduced from the Abbé de Sade's minuter work. De Sade was the lineal descendant of Laura; and clears up the question of the perfect innocence, the mere poetic nature, of Petrarch's attachment to her. Mrs. Dobson's work is esteemed. Twenty-five biographers of Petrarch are enumerated. His commentators make a host innumerable. Tytler (Lord Woodhouselee) gave (Edinburgh, 1810, 8vo) an Essay on his Life and Writings. See, also, Mrs. Jameson's "Loves of the Poets," in Collections, BIOGRAPHY. In Miss Berry's "Memoirs of Joanna, Queen of Naples," many passages relating to him may also be found. Tiraboschi and the other historians of Italian literature have abundantly illustrated his works.

Doddridge, Dr. Philip: Memoir of some remarkable Passages in

the Life of Colonel James Gardiner, slain at the Battle of Preston-Pans, 1745. London, 1796. 12mo.
