(6101) Longman, Orme, and Co. TO THE BOOKSELLERS AND PROPRIETORS OF CIRCULATING LIBRARIES OF THE UNITED KINGDON. The great and still increasing number of Circulating Libraries and Literary Institutions throughout the country is a proof of the eagerness of the public to peruse new works of merit. This craving has been checked, in the case of Works of Fiction especially, by the very high price at which they have for some years been published. It has been found that the selling price of 10s. 6d. per volume does not admit of an adequate return of profit to the greater proportion of these establishments, and booksellers are therefore compelled to disappoint their customers by waiting until they can purchase copies at a reduced rate, when the work has become of less interest. In addition to the above objection, the Trade has had reason to complain of the system, frequently resorted to for some years past, of disposing of remainders of books within a short period after their publication, the effect of which has naturally been to weaken confidence in the Publishers' prices. The present moment appears to be favourable for attempting to remedy these defects. The eagerness of Publishers to bring out works without sufficient discrimination has now subsided; many Booksellers have partially, or wholly, withdrawn from this branch of business; and the most eminent Authors, from a conviction of the advan 8, New Burlington Street, 13th Nov. 1838. tages likely to accrue to themselves from the measure contemplated, have promised their co-operation. The plan proposed by Mr. Bentley is, First, to reduce the selling price of Novels, henceforth to be published by him, from 10s. 6d. to 8s. per volume; the form, and style of printing, and paper, being the same. Secondly, not to dispose of the remainder of any Novel he may publish from this period for at least three years from its first appearance. Indeed this measure may not be resorted to by him at all. Thirdly, to allow a larger interval of time between the publication of each new Novel. The cordial support of the Trade is confidently relied upon by Mr. Bentley in taking a step so obviously advantageous to it, and especially to the proprietors of Circulating Libraries. Should this plan fail to extend the sale considerably, there will, of course, be no alternative but to recur to the old terms.
