MR. MOON, HER MAJESTY'S PUBLISHER, 20, Threadneedle Street, has the honour to announce the following important Works of Art :

SIR DAVID WILKIE'S NEW WORKS.

THE

APOSTOLICAL AUTHORITY of the EPISTLE to the HEBREWS: an Inquiry, in which the received Title of the Greek Epistle is vindicated against the cavils of objectors, ancient and modern, from Origen to Michaelis, chiefly upon grounds hitherto unnoticed; comprising a comparative analysis of the style to JOHN KNOX and structure of this Epistle and of the undisputed Epistles PREACHING. of St. Paul, tending to throw light upon their interpretation. By the Rev. CHARLES FORSTER, B.D. Author of "The Life of Bishop Jebb." 8vo. In a few days. (6078)

COMPANION

In consequence of the encouraging patronage and unexampled success which have attended the publication of Mr. Doo's Engraving after the above great Picture by Sir David Wilkie, Mr. Moon has entered into arrangements with the same eminent Artists for the immediate production of a corresponding historical subject of equal effect and importance. The Painting, which will form not only an apposite but indispensable companion to the "Preaching of John Knox," is already very consideraby advanced in the hands of Sir David Wilkie. (6076)

the most exquisite style of Line by F. ENGLEHEART, from a Picture by Sir DAVID WILKIE, R.A. Forming a Continuation of "Domestic Subjects" from this celebrated Master. Dedicated by express permission to

Lady Frances Egerton. Size 24 inches by 18 high. Prints, 2. 12s. 6d.; Proofs, £5. 5s.; India Proofs, £7. 78.; Before Letters, 10. 10s.-Just ready.

This beautiful and touching picture is engraved in the most exquisite style of art, and forms one of a series of those pictures by Sir David Wilkie, which are classed, for the purpose of publication, under the general head of "Domestic Subjects." Few productions of the pencil ever made a more pathetic appeal than the one in question to the sympathies of those for whom the poetry of life sounds sweetest by the fireside, and who look for its highest and most enthralling interests amid the sacred recesses of what the English emphatically call Home.

The class of the great Artist's works to which the picture before us belongs, may be called, emphatically, the domestic, and represents the incidents of peaceful and private life; but, in this latter case, rather on the affecting than the humorous side, and less for the sake of the moral than of the poetry which they enclose. In all these varieties of subject and manner, the one thing for which, over all others, Wilkie is most remarkable, is his minute and unerring imitation of nature,-his perfect truth of character, a quality which makes each of his pictures the immediate exponent of its own story, and at once awakens in the breast of the spectator the exact sentiment which it was the painter's design to convey. one of his pictures, of the class to which it belongs, is this great dramatic quality more conspicuous or this effect more clearly produced, than in the one whose admirable engraving is here called into notice.

TO THE BOOKSELLERS AND PROPRIETORS OF CIRCULATING LIBRARIES OF THE UNITED KINGDON.

[blocks in formation]

The great and still increasing number of Circulating Libraries and Literary Institutions throughout the country is a proof of the eagerness of the public to peruse new works of merit. This craving has been checked, in the case of Works of Fiction especially, by the very high price at which they have for some years been published. It has been found that the selling price of 10s. 6d. per volume does not admit of an adequate return of profit to the greater proportion of these establishments, and booksellers are therefore compelled to disappoint their customers by waiting until they can purchase copies at a reduced rate, when the work has become of less interest.

In addition to the above objection, the Trade has had reason to complain of the system, frequently resorted to for some years past, of disposing of remainders of books within a short period after their publication, the effect of which has naturally been to weaken confidence in the Publishers' prices.

The present moment appears to be favourable for attempting to remedy these defects. The eagerness of Publishers to bring out works without sufficient discrimination has now subsided; many Booksellers have partially, or wholly, withdrawn from this branch of business; and the most eminent Authors, from a conviction of the advan

8, New Burlington Street, 13th Nov. 1838. tages likely to accrue to themselves from the measure contemplated, have promised their co-operation. The plan proposed by Mr. Bentley is,

First, to reduce the selling price of Novels, henceforth to be published by him, from 10s. 6d. to 8s. per volume; the form, and style of printing, and paper, being the same.

Secondly, not to dispose of the remainder of any Novel he may publish from this period for at least three years from its first appearance. Indeed this measure may not be resorted to by him at all.

Thirdly, to allow a larger interval of time between the publication of each new Novel.

The cordial support of the Trade is confidently relied upon by Mr. Bentley in taking a step so obviously advantageous to it, and especially to the proprietors of Circulating Libraries. Should this plan fail to extend the sale considerably, there will, of course, be no alternative but to recur to the old terms.

The first Work published upon the reduced price is Mr. Dickens's celebrated story of "Oliver Twist*," which will be followed by Works of Fiction from the undermentioned distinguished writers: Sir EDWARD LYTTON BULWER, Bart.; the Author of "SAM SLICK"; Mr. THEODORE HOOK; Mr. MAXWELL, Author of "Stories of Waterloo"; Mr. J. FENNIMORE Cooper; Captain GLASCOCK, R.N.; Mr. AINSWORTH; Mrs. TROLLOPE; Mr. G. P. R. JAMES; Mrs. C. GORE; "THE OLD SAILOR"; Mr. HOFFMAN, &c.

OLIVER TWIST being illustrated and bound in cloth, the price is 25s. instead of 24s. to defray the increase of cost.
