AN ABRIDGMENT of MURRAY'S

ENGLISH GRAMMAR, in the way of Question and Answer; with Explanatory Notes, and a variety of Exercises in Parsing and Syntax. By the Rev. J. ELLIS.

"I have felt convinced, from several years' experience in tuition, that the customary method for the acquisition of learning does not make so strong an impression on the mind as putting the subject in the way of question and answer. Being impressed with this idea, I have undertaken the compilation: in doing which, I have cautiously given the answers in the author's own language; and for the purpose of explaining the most difficult terms which are used by Mr. Murray, I have added several Notes, which I trust may be found both satisfactory and useful. Should this little volume attract the attention of any who are engaged in the instruction of youth, I respectfully solicit a fair and impartial reading."-INTRODUCTION. (2900)

"The author ventures to send forth this little volume to the world, trusting that it will be found adapted to private use, to the instruction of families, and the improvement of youth." (2901)

WILSON'S NEW FRENCH SCHOOL DICTIONARY.

A FRENCH and ENGLISH, and ENGLISH

NEW GERMAN GRAMMAR.

By the PARADIGMS and

and FRENCH, SCHOOL DICTIONARY. Rev. JOSEPH WILSON, late Professor of French in St. Gregory's College. Pocket size, 5s. bound and lettered.

** In the compilation of this Dictionary, no labour has been spared to render it complete in every desirable particular. The plan has been adopted, after a careful examination of the Dictionaries already in existence; whatever was deemed excellent in each has been freely followed, while their numerous deficiencies have been supplied, and their superfluities retrenched. The details of the work have been most laboriously attended to, the genders of the French nouns have been vigilantly examined, the English accentuation is marked, the definitions and their inflexions have been accurately distinguished, and a multitude of professional and technical phrases are introduced. The Vocabularies, christian, mythological, historical, and geographical, are rendered almost indispensable by the increasing intercourse of the French with other nations; and it is believed this Dictionary will be found the most comprehensive of all the small editions before the public. ΑΝ N HISTORICAL ATLAS; being a Series of Maps of the World as known at different periods; constructed on the same scale, and coloured so as to exhibit the successive changes of empire. With a connected Narrative accompanying each Map, so as to afford a complete view of Universal History. By E. QUIN, M.A. of Magdalen Hall, Oxford, and Barrister-at-Law of the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn. 2d edition, 4to. 42s. half-bound. The Maps by Sidney Hall. (2917)

"We have seldom had the pleasure of reviewing a more ingenious, elegant, and, at the same time, philosophical and useful work. It is well worthy of public attention, as a specimen of art, independently of its merits as an original and eminently useful auxiliary to the study of the most important branches of human knowledge."

NEW MONTHLY MAGAZINE, March.

"Mr. Seeley has published a highly useful series of Twenty-one Maps, with Historical Illustrations by Mr. Quin. They are all on the same scale, and successively point out, from the Creation to the Year 1828, the progress of Geographical Discovery, the rise and decay of Nations and Empires, and their Political changes; so that by merely glancing the eye on any map, we discover the actual state of the world at its date; and by comparison with any other, the alterations which have occurred; every place being in the same relative spot in the successive Plates, and the tints and colouring being significant, and connected with the accompanying Text, which contains a well-condensed Syllabus of Universal History. We know of no publication which forms a more valuable and interesting companion for the historical and geographical student, or for the instruction of young persons."

CHRISTIAN OBSERVER, January.

*** The high_reputation which this work already sustains, relieves the publisher from the necessity of stating, in detail, its claims upon public attention. It has been placed, by the united voice of the literary world, at the head of Biblical Encyclopædias, and has been pronounced to be, "in its present form, an invaluable treasury of Biblical lore, and a stupendous monument of literary i dustry.
