The correspondence of Erasmus, and that of Scaliger, Grotius, and Lipsius, afford a great mass of literary history. The French Ana also contain much; and the volumes of the Encyclopédie Méthodique, which are entitled Encyclopédiana. Grimm's memoirs offer also a good body, and the correspondence of Voltaire. Boswell's Life of Johnson contains a great part of the English literary history of that time. Hodius has been referred to, as to the Revival of Letters. (See Roscoe, in Biography.) As to Bardic literature, Larue's Recherches sur les Ouvrages des Bardes de la Bretagne Armorienne; Walker's Essay on the Irish Bards; and the notices of Druidic literature in Turner's Anglo-Saxons, are all that need be examined. Mallet's Introduction and Histoire de Danemarc contain a great part of the history of Scandinavian literature.

Of the ancients, Photius, Hesychius, and Aulus Gellius are all that can well be mentioned.

Watt, Robert

Worcester,

Bibliotheca Britannica; or, a General Index to British and Foreign Literature. Edinburgh, 1824. 4 vols. 4to. Photius's Myriobiblon is the oldest of bibliographical works. The best edition, Græco-Latiné, Rothomaga, 1653. Folio. The abbot Trithemius and Richard de Buri are the earliest modern writers. The former is given, with various lesser ancient performances, in Fabricius's Bibliotheca Ecclesiastica. Hamburg, 1718. Folio. The latter has lately been re-edited in England. Gesner's Bibliotheca was the first considerable work, and long served as the basis for subsequent bibliographers. Of old books, however, few, except the Polyhistor of Morhof, are any longer of value, except to the adepts of book-taste. At present, for direct utility, Brunet's Manuel du Libraire is without a rival. A new edition of his 4 vols., and of his supplement in 3. is now appearing. The Dictionnaire des Ouvrages Anonymes et Pseudonymnes is, however, upon Brunet's plan, necessary, as an auxiliary. The Bibliographer's Manual of Lowndes, London, 1834, 4 vols. 8vo, is good and useful, as to books printed in Britain. Dibdin's various publications are rather adapted to the use of the bibliomaniac, than that of the man of letters. Beloe's Anecdotes of Literature (London, 180611, 6 vols. 8vo) are good and various. Horne's Introduction to the study of Bibliography is useful; and (Adam Clark's) Bibliographical Dictionary and Miscellany. As to the Classics, Moss's Manual of Classical Bibliography, London, 1825, 2 vols. 8vo, is now the best resource, though having many strange omissions of authors that should have been noticed. Audiffredi is full of taste and learning as to the early Roman editions. The book of Maittaire is highly useful to the pursuits of scholarship. Panzer is sometimes inaccurate, but is still of much esteem and utility. Laire's Index Librorum Rariorum is curious and interesting. Clement's Bibliothèque Curieuse is esteemed; and De Bure's Bibliographie Instructive, though in part superseded, highly useful still. Renouard has given an admirable history of the Aldine press; Greswell, good ones of the Stephens's and early Greek press of Paris; and Adry, of the Elzevirs. Herbert and Ames's Typographical Antiquities of England are also interesting, though as yet, in their last and best edition (London, 1810-19), only finished to the 4th volume.
