To beware of philofophy, &c. 911 3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Paul defcribeth the true Chrift. Chap. ii. vifible and invifible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by. him, and for him :

17 And he is before all things, and by him all things confift.

4 And this fay, left any man should beguile you with enticing words.

5 For though I be abfent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the fpirit, joying 18 And he is the head of the body, the and beholding your order, and the fteadchurch who is the beginning, the firft-faftnefs of your faith in Chrift. born from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

:

19 For it pleafed the Father that in him fhould all fulness dwell;

20 And having made peace through the blood of his crofs, by him, to reconcile all things unto himfelf; by him, I fay, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

6 As ye have therefore received Chrift Jefus the Lord, so walk ye in him :

7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablifhed in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

8 Beware left any man fpoil you through philofophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Chrift.

21 And you that were fometime alien- 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of ated and enemies in your mind by wick-the Godhead bodily. ed works, yet now hath he reconciled,

10 And ye are complete in him, which

22 In the body of his flesh through is the head of all principality and power: death, to prefent you holy and unblame. able and unreproveable in his fight:

23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and fettled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gofpel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

24 Who now rejoice in my fufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Chrift in my flesh for his body's fake, which is the church:

25 Whereof I am made a minifter, according to the difpenfation of God, which is given to me for you to fulfil the word of God;

26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifeft to his faints :

27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Chritt in you, the hope of glory :

28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wifdom; that we may prefent every man perfect in Christ Jesus ;

29 Whereunto I alfo labour, ftriving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

CHAP. II.

1 Paul exhorteth them to conftancy in Cbrift, 8 to beware of philosophy and vain traditions, 13 worshipping of an. gels, 20 and legal ceremonies.

FOR I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not feen my face in the fef;

2 That their hearts might be com forted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full affurance of understanding, to the acknowledgment of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Chrift;

11 In whom affo ye are circumcifed with the circumcifion made without hands, in putting off the body of the fins of the flesh by the circumcifion of Chrift:

12 Buried with him in baptifm,wherein alfo ye are rifen with bim through the faith-of the operation of God who hath raifed him from the dead.

13 And you, being dead in your fins and the uncircumcifion of your flef, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trefpaffcs;

14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

15 and having fpoiled principalities and powers, he made a fhew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat or in drinks or in refpect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the fabbath days:

17 Which are a fhadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worfhipping of angels, intruding into thofe things which he hath not feen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

19 And not holding the head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment miniftered, and knit together, increafeth with the increafe of God.

20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Chrift from the rudiments of the world, Why, as though living in the world, are ye fubject to ordinances,

21 (Touch not; tafte not; handle not; 22 Which all are to perith with the using) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

Paul exhorteth to be fervent in prayer, 5 and to walk wifely toward item that do not yet know Cbrift.

MASTERS, give unto your fervants that which is just and equal : knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.

That I may make it manifeft, as I ought to fpeak.

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF

PAUL THE APOSTLE TO THE THESSALONIANS.

CHAP. I.

1 He fbeweth bis mindfulness of them in thanksgiving and prayer, 5 and perJuafion of their fincere faith and converfion.

Jour God to speak unto you the gospel of
God with much contention.

3 For our exhortation was not of de

ceit, nor of uncleannefs, nor in guile:

But as we were allowed of God to PAUL, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, be put in truft with the gofpel, even fo anto the church of the Theffalonians we fpeak: not as pleasing men, but God, which is in God the Father and in the which trieth our hearts." Lord Jefus Chrift: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father,andthe Lord Jefus Chrift.

2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers,

8 Remembering without ceafing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jefus Chrift, in the fight of God and our Father;

4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.

5 For our gofpel came not unto you in word only, but alfo in power, and in the Holy Ghoft, and in much affurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your fake.

6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Gholt:

7 So that ye were enfamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.

8 For from you founded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but alfo in every place your faith to God ward is fpread abroad; fo that we need not to speak any thing.

9 For they themselves thew of tis what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to ferve the living and true God,

5 For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetoufnefs; God is witness :

6 Nor of men fought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Chrift.

7 But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children.

8 So being affectionately defirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but alfo our own fouls, because ye were dear unto us.

9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gofpel of God.

10 Ye are witneffes, and God also, how holily, and juftly, and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:

11 As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you (as a father doth his children,)

12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

13 For this caufe alfo thank we God without ceasing, because when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, 10 And to wait for his Son from heav-ye received it not as the word of men, en, whom he raifed from the dead, even Jefus, which delivered us from the wrath

to come.

but as it is in truth the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

14 For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judea are in Chrift Jefus : for ye alfo have fuffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:

15 Who both killed the Lord Jefus, and their own prophets, and have perfe cuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:

16 Forbidding us to speak to the Genthes

tiles that they might be faved, to fill up their fins alway: for the wrath is come 1 upon them to the uttermoft.

17 But we, brethren, being taken from you for a fhort time, in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to fee your face with great

FURTHERMORE, then, we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jefus, that as ye have received of us 18 Wherefore we would have come un-how ye ought to walk and to please God, to you, even I Paul, once and again; but so ye would abound more and more... 19 For, What is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the prefence of our Lord Jefus Chrift at his coming?

20 For ye are our glory and joy. CHAP. III.

1 Paul's love in fending Timothy to them. 6 His joy for them,and defire ro fee them. WHEREFORE when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone;

And fent Timotheus, our brother, and minifter of God, and our fellow labourer in the gofpel of Chrift, to eftablish you,and to comfort you concerning your faith: 8 That no man fhould be moved by thefe afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.

4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should fuffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.

5 For this caufe, when I could no longer forbear, I fent to know your faith, left by fome means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

64 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that yehave good remembrance of us always, defiring greatly to fee us, as we alfo to See you:

7 Therefore brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and diftrefs by your faith:

8 For now we live, if ye ftand faft in the Lord.

3 For this is the will of God, even your fanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

▲ That every one of you should know how to poffefs his vessel in fanctification and honour;

5 Not in the luft of concupifcence,even as the Gentiles which know not God:

6 That no mau go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all fuch, as we alfo have forewarned you, and teftifed.

7 For God hath not called us unto uncleannefs, but unto holiness.

8 He therefore that defpifeth, defpifeth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you; for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one

another.

10 And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia : but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more;

11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business,and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you:

12 That ye may walk honeftly toward them that are without, and thai ye may have lack of nothing.

19 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are afleep, that ye forrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jefus died, 9 For what thanks can we render to and rofe again, even fo them alfo which God again for you, for all the joy where-fleep in Jefus will God bring with him. with we joy for your fakes before ourGod; 15 For this we fay unto you by the 10 Night and day praying exceedingly word of the Lord, that we which are that we might fee your face, and might alive and remain unto the coming of the perfect that which is lacking in your Lord fhall not prevent them which are afleep.

faith?

11 Now God himfelf and our Father, and our Lord Jefus Chrift direct our way unto you':

12 And the Lord make you to increafe and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:

18 To the end he may ftablish your hearts unblameable in holinefs before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jefus Chrift with all his faints.

16 For the Lord himself shall defcend from heaven with a fhout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trump of God: and the dead in Chrift thall rife firft;

17 Then we which are alive and remain, thall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air and fo fhall we ever be with the Lord.

:

18 Wherefore, comfort one another with these words.

BUT of the times and the feafons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord fo cometh as a thief in the night.

3 For when they hall fay, Peace and fafety; then fudden deftruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not efcape.

4 But ye, brethren,are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

:

6 Therefore, let us not fleep as do others; but let us watch and be fober.

7 For they that fleep, fleep in the night; and they that be drunken, are drunken in the night:

8 But let us, who are of the day, be fober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and for an helmet the hope of falvation:

CHAP. I.

1 Paul fbewerb bis good opinion of their faith, love and patience; 11 and comforteth them against perfecution. PAUL, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Theffalonians, in God our Father and the Lord Jefus Christ:

2 Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord JefusChrift We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth ;

4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God, for your patience and faith in all your perfecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

5 Which is a manifeft token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye alfo fuffer:

6 Secing it is a righteous thing with God to recompenfe tribulation to them that trouble you:

7 And to you who are troubled, reft with us, when the Lord Jefus fhall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

8 In flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gofpel of our Lord Jefus Chrift;

9 Who shall be punished with everlafting deftruction from the prefence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power:
