And again: We worShip and adore God himSelf, and his Son (who came forth from him, and taught thefe things both to Us and to the whole Hoft of good Angels which follow and imitate him;) and the Prophetick Spirit; bonouring them according to reafon and Truth, (that is, according to the Order expreffed in the other paffage before-cited.) [It muft indeed here be confeffed, that the natural Pofition of the words. in this Period, and especially the interpofition of the word dna, do lead to another manner of Pointing, and confequently to another Rendring of the Sentence: But then on the other fide, the Nature and Reason of the Thing, and the Authors manner of expreffing the fame Senfe in That other paffage before-cited, do very much favour the tranflation I have here fet down; which may also be not a little confirmed by a parallel place in Ireneus, where He likewife thus expreffes himfelf; The Father of our Lord Jefus Chrift (faith he)manifefts and reveals himself to All, whom

The fame thing Clemens Alexandrinus expresses, by afirming Chrift to be, τη δεσπότη της ὅλων εξισωθείς, ίσα De,] equalized with the Supreme Lord of all things: In the language of Tertullian, pariatus Deo, equalized with God: And in the words of Eufebius, more near to thofe of Scripture, ouder & caută Baornéas, fitting together with God upon the Throne of his Kingdom.

This Honour, the Scripture directs to be paid to Chrift; not fo much upon Account of his metaphyfical Effence or Subftance, and abftract Attributes; as of his Actions and Attributes relative to Us; his Condefcenfion in becoming Man, who was the Son of God; his Redeeming, and Interceding for, us; his Authority, Power, Dominion, and Sitting upon the Throne of God his Father, as our Lawgiver, our King, our Judge, and our God.

Notes on $51.

The Expreffions of Scripture upon This Head, are very clear. Mat. xxviii; 18, 19, All Power is gi ven unto me in heaven and in Earth; Go THEREye FORE, and teach all Nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the SON, &c. And Rev. i; 5, 6, Unto Him that loved us and washed us from our Sins in his own Blood, and hath made us Kings and Priefts unto God and his Father; to Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. And ch. v, ver. 9, They fung a new Song, faying, Thou art ·wortby ; for thou waft flain, and haft redeemed us to God by thy Blood; and haft made us unto our God Kings and Priests, &c.

Honour is due, not to the abftract metaphyfical Nature, Effence or Subftance, but to the Perfon intelligent, and as having Dignity, Power, Authority and Goodness. Each Perfon is to be honoured, for what the Perfon is and does: The Father, as the Supreme original of All; having in Himself abfolutely and derived from None, all Power, Authority, and all divine Attri butes: The Son, as being the Son of the Father, and receiving from Him (in an incomprehenfible manner) That Nature and Thofe Attributes which the Scripture afcribes to him; and as being the Saviour and Redeemer of the World: The Holy Ghoft, as being the Spirit of the Father and of the Son, fent forth to be the Infpirer of all revealed Truth, and the Sanct fier of all Hearts, according to the Will of the Father, by the Administration and Difpenfation of the Son.

The Honour paid in this manner to the Son, muft (as before) always be understood as redounding ultimately to the Glory of God the Father.

For putting up Prayers and Supplications directly and exprefly to the Perfon of the Holy Spirit, it must be acknowledged there is no clear Precept or Example in Scripture.
