For, (faith be,) there is One God, and there is None other but He: And when the Scripture faith, the Father is the Only God, and that there is One God, Ουκ εἰς ἀναίρεσιν ἢ τὸ ἐξ is the One God, and the Only one, and the Firft. Joh. V, 44. and feek not the Honour that cometh from God only; [Gr. ag 78 Move Oe, from the Only God.] xvii, 3. Athanaf. contra fuch ; even the Father of Gentes. Chrift. And again: The Knowledge (faith he) of the One and Only True God, I mean the Father of Chrift. And again: He whom we preach and worthip, (faith be,) is the Only True God, the Lord of all Creatures, and the Author of all Being: And Who clfe is That, but παρ ̓ ἡμῶν προσκε νόμβριον και κηρυττόμενον, το τον μόνον εἶναι Θεὸν ἀληθῆ, τὸν καὶ τῆς κτίσεως κύριον, και πάσης υποςά σεως δημιεργόν. Τις ἢ ἐν Ev the moft Holy Father of ν τ, αλλ ̓ ἤ ὁ πα Chrift, even He who is far above all derivative Being? who, as an excellent Governor, governs and preferves every thing every where, and difpofes and does every thing according to his own Pleafure, by hisown Wifdom and his own Word, even by our Lord Jefus Chrift. And long before Him, Origen; To there then (fays be.) [viz. who charge us with believing Two Gods,] we must reply, that He which is God of Himfelf, is That God; For which reafon our Saviour fays in his Prayer to his νάγια καὶ ὑπερέκεινα πά σης γεννητης ἐσίας ὁ τὸ χριςέ πατὴρ ; ὅςις καθάπερ ἄρις κυβερνήτης, τη ιδία σοφίᾳ καὶ τῷ ἰδίῳ λίγῳ τῷ Κυρίῳ ἡμῶν Ἰησᾶ Χρισῷ τὰ πανταχε κυ βερνᾶ σωτηρίως, και δια κοσμά, ναι ποιεῖ, ὡς ἄν αυτῶ καλῶς ἔχειν δοκῇ. Οι rigen. in Fob. pag.45. Hue tii. of His Divinity, cannot fo properly be called That God, but rather a Divine Perfon &c. 6. Rom. iii, 30. Seeing it is † One God, which 7. 8. c. The meaning in this place is only, One and the Same God both of the Jews and Gentiles. xvi, 27. To God Only Wife, [Gr. Mów oops, To the Only wife God,] &c. called I Cor. viii; 4, 6. There is none other God, but One. For though there be that are Gods Many and Lords Many; to Us there is but One God, [viz.] the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord, (viz.] Jefus Chrift, by whom are all things, and we by him. Though there be Gods Many, faith Mr. Mede, (that is, many Celestial and Sovereign Deities,) and Lords Many, (that is, many Baalims, Lords-agents and Prefidents of Earthly things;) yet to us Chriftians there is but one Sovereign God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we to Him, (that is, to whom as Supreme we are to direct all our Services ;) and but one Lord Jefus Chrift, one Lord-agent (instead of their many Baalims and Damon-Mediators,) by whom are all things which come from the Father to us, |
