34. When a word ending in a vowel is followed by another beginning with a vowel, *Sರಸಂಧಿ requires the following changes:

I. any short vowel at the end of the first word (other than pure Sanscrit) is omitted before the initial one of the second, if the omission does not change the sense of the words thus united; ದಟ್ಟ+ಅಡಿ-ದ&ಡಿ; ಅಡ್ಡ+ಆಡು ಅಡ್ಡಾಡು; ಇಲ್ಲಿ+ಇರು=ಇಲ್ಲಿರು; ಹೋದಿರಿ ಎಂದು ಹೋದಿರೆಂದು; ಎರಡು+ಆಣೆ ಎರಡಾಣೆ,

as

Note 1, Before ಅಪ್ಪ, ಅಜ್ಜಿ, ಅಯ್ಯ, ಅಣ್ಣ, ಅಕ್ಕ, ಅ, and the final short vowel of the preceding Proper Noun is necessarily dropped. e.g. ಹುಚ್ಚ+ಅಪ್ಪ-ಹುಚ್ಚಪ್ಪ ; ವಿರುವ+ಅ=ವಿರುವಾಕ್ಷ; ಕಾಮ+ ಅಯ್ಯ=ರಾಮಯ್ಯ; ಬಸವ+ಅಣ್ಣ-ಬಸವಣ್ಣ; ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ+ಅಕ್ಕ-ಲಕ್ಷಕ್ಕ ರಾಧೆ+ಅಮ್ಮ=ರಾಧಮ್ಮ; ಗಂಗೆ+ಅಪ್ಪ-ಗಂಗವ್ವ,

II. If the sense is altered by the omission of the short vowel, insteadof the omission, an additional consonant is inserted; the final or takes and ಇor ಎ,

as:

ಮರ ಅನ್ನು=ಮರವನ್ನು; ಮಿಡಿಇಂದ=ಮಿಡಿಯಿಂದ ಮಗುಇಗೆ ಮ ಸುವಿಗೆ; ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ,

Exception 1. But in some instances, is drop

Exception 2. is inserted between the final And the Emphatic (ಅವಧಾರ್ಣಾರ್ಥಕ) Particle - or ಏ, the Interrogative or &, or the Conjunctive :

ಅವನಿಂದ --- ಎ - ಅವನಿಂದ; ನಿನ್ನಿಂದ -ಏನಿನ್ನಿಂದಲೇ; ಅವ ಇಂದ - ಬ = ಅವಳಿಂದ ? ರಾಮನಿಂದ ಓ= ರಾಮನಿಂದ? ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ -- ಊ = ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ,

III, The above rule does not hold good in the case of pure Sanscrit words; but is inserted after the final,, or, and after ಇ; as:- ಸುಖ + ಆಗಿ ಸುಖವಾಗಿ; ಮುನಿ+ ಅ = ಮುನಿಯ; ಸು + ಅನ್ನು = ಗುರುವನು; ಮಾತೃ -- ಇ ಮಾತೃವಿಗೆ

IV. All the final long vowels require the insertion of 5 after them; ದೇವಾ-- ಎಂದು ದೇವಾಯಂ ದು; ಮಾ -- ಅದೆ =ಮರಾಯದೆ ಮೈ -- ಅನ್ನು=ಮೈಯನ್ನು

Although this rule equally applies whether the first word, with a long vowel at the end, is Canarese or Sanscrit, there are very few such Sanscrit words used in Canarese; for, the final ,, or, of Sanscrit words is respectively changed to, or, before the adoption of such words in Canarese,

But, not 5, is optionally inserted by : ಪದಾಂತ್ಯ ಸಂಧಿ between the Demonstratives or or the final vowel in, and the initial ev, e,, or ; ೩s:- ಆ+ ಉಸುರು = ಆ ಉಸುರು or ಆವುಗುರು; ಆ + ಊರುಆ ಉರು or ಆವೂರು; ಈ + ಬಡಿವೆ = ಈಬಡಿವೆ or ಈವೊಡಿವೆ; ಈ + ಓಟ = ಈಓಟ or ಈವೋಟ; ಎಲ್ಲ + ಓಣಿಗಳು -ಎಲ್ಲಾಓ 29 + ಣಿಗಳು or ಎಲ್ಲ ವೋಣಿಗಳು.

VI. In pure Canarese words, , added to a palatal is sometimes changed to;

as:

35. The following are the principal Rules of ಕನ್ನಡ ವ್ಯಂಜನಸಂಧಿ:

1. When a word, is followed by another with an initial 5, 86, 5 స్, the latter are respectively chanced to 5, 5, 5. e.g. 2+=; ಬರ ಬರಗಾಲ, ಹೊಸಕನ್ನಡ-ಹೊಸಗನ್ನಡ, ಬೆ+ತಾವರೆ=ಬೆಳ್ಳಾವರೆ, ಬೆಳತಿಂಗಳು =☎gdozgɔ; Zaðɔ+53)=ënowõ); ~2.1-3A) = Kawa).

II. In Old Canarese Compounds, the initial 5, 25, 5 are changed to 5, after the final vowel of the first word. e.g. O&KBR; WY+BOO =W_ ಕೈವೊಲ; ಹಿಮ್ಮ+ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಹಿಮವೆಟ್ಟ ಮೇಲೆ+ಮಾತು=ಮೇಲೆ ತು; ಪೆ 2+2=283.

III. In pure Canarese Compounds, when the initial is preceded by any consonant except or 5, it is changed to or ; e.g. 45+8=20248; ಇಂಚರ: ನುಣ+ಸರ=ನುರ; ಪೊನೆಸುರಿಗೆ ಪೊಂಜರಿಗೆ, ಮುನಿಸೆರಗು-ಮುಂ 287).

IV. When an Old Canarese, Sanscrit or Foreign word, ending in a single consonant, is taken in Modern Canarese, is generally added to the letter; and if the final consonant is 5,5,,,, or preceded by a short vowel, it is doubled. 5; 55&J); ಸಲಾಸ-ಸಲಾಮು ಜಗತ್-ಜಗತ್ತು; ಕೊಹ=ಕೆಯ್ಯು; ಬಹ=ಯ್ಯು; ಕಲೆ=ಕಲ್ಲು: ತೇಜನೆ=ತೇಜಸ್ಸು, ವಿದ್ಯುತ್‌=ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ತು; ನೋಟಿF=Sa&K); Ing=2ugg.

V before an initial consonant is changed

the syllable to which the initial consonant belongs. ಕಾರಿ ಕತ್ತಲೆ=ಕಾರ್ಗತೆ; ಕಾರಿನಾಡು ಕಾರ್ನಾಡು, ಏಬಿಡುವ ವಿರ್ವಾಡು; ಕುಳಿಗಾಳಿ: ಕುಳಿರ್ಗಾಳಿ,

VI. When a final consonant is followed by an initial consonant, the latter merges into the Former; ಸಾ+ಪುರ=ಇಲ್ಕರ: ಕಲ್ಕ ನಾರು,ಕಲರು; ನಾಣ ನುಡಿ-ನಾಣ್ಣುಡಿ; ನೀರಿಕೊಳ್ಳದೆ ನೀರ್ಕೊಳಿವೆ.

VII. A single nasal before an initial consonant is changed into ; e.g. ಮುನಿಬಾಗಿಲ ಮುಂಬಾಗಿಲು, ತಣ್+ಗಾಳಿ,ತಂಗಾಳಿ; ಕೆ+ಪು=ಕೆಂಪು.

Note, The above three rules are based on the principle that a consonant cannot stand by itself, except at the end of a word, without coalescing

with a vowel,

VIII, When

is followed by

and 3, is substituted for the final syllable as:ಹತ್ತು ಬಂದು ಹನ್ನೊಂದು ಹತ್ತು-ಎರಡು ಹನ್ನೆರಡು

When itis followed by ಮೂರು and ನಾಲ್ಕು, ದಿ takes the place of ು ಹತ್ತು--ಮರು-ಹದಿಮೂರು; by ಹತ್ತು - ನಾ = ಹದಿನಾಲ್ಕು

When the same () comes before, e ರು, ಎಳು and ಎಂಟು, ದಿನ್ is substituted for ತ್ತು; ಹತ್ತುಐದು= ಹದಿನೈದು; ಹತ್ತು -ಆರು= ಹದಿನಾರು, ಹತ್ತು+ವಿಳು - ಹ ದಿನೇಳು; ಹತ್ತು - ಎಂದು = ಹದಿನೆಂಟು

IX, When ಹೊಸ and ಹತ್ತೆ are followed by ಅನು ಬ interveness a8:- ಹೊಸ.ಅನು = ಹೊಸಬನು, ಹಲ್ಲೆ -- ಅನು ಹಳಬನು,

X. The numerals E,,,, o drop their final before an initial consonant, which is then doubled. e. g. WJ + Fisz woy; 25-1-303 = - ಒಪ್ಪೋ 31 ( 253 ) 27.1. *3 = ಕಡೆ ಇವೆ; ಇರ್ - ಪತ್ತು = ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು;

ಮರ್ -- ಕಣ್ಣು = ಮುಕ್ಕಣ್ಣು; ಮರ -- ಕಾಲು = ಮುಕ್ಕಾಲು,

XI. A Participle ending in sometimes loses the final syllable (ದು ), before ಕೊಳ್ಳು, ಕೊಡು, ತರು and such other verbs; and the vowel immediately preceding is changed to; e. g. 2 -1- Sugg ಬರೆದು ಖರಕೊಳ್ಳು; ಹಿಡಿದು - ತರು ಹಿಡತರು,

XII. In pure Canarese words, the finals before an initial consonant is sometime changed to ; as, ಬರೆ - ದು ಇ, ಬರದು; ಕಥೆ-- ದು = ಕಳದು; ಹಲ್ಲೆ -- ಕನ್ನಡ ಸ ಹಕ್ಕ ಕನ್ನಡ,

XIII, When a word of three or more syllables is twice repeated in a compound ( ES35), the final syllable of the first word is often omitted; as, ಮೆಲ್ಲನೆ ಮೆಲ್ಲನೆ = ಮೆಲ್ಲಮೆಲ್ಲನೆ ಬಾರಿಗೆ -1ಬಾರಿಗೆ = ಬಾರಿಬಾರಿಗೆ; ಸುಳಿದು-ಸುಳಿದು - ಸುಳಿಸದು,

But in some cases, where the word repeated consists of two or more syllables, all the syllables in the first word, except the initial, give place to &: as, ನಡುವೆ -- ನಡುವೆ - ನಟ್ಟನಡುವೆ; ಕಡೆಗೆ -1- ಕಡೆಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟಕಡೆಗೆ; ಬದಿ - ಬದಿ s ಬಟ್ಟೆಬದಿ,

And in some others, the initial syllable of the second word gives place to or ree. g. ಅಕ್ಕಿ = ಅಕ್ಕಿಗಿಕ್ಕಿ; ಮನೆ - ಮನೆ = ಮನೆಗಿ; ಬಟ್ಟಲು - ಬಟ್ಟಲು ಬಟ್ಟಲುಗಿದ್ದಲು,
