"Like a garden judiciously laid out, are the volumes of a literary journal. The industrious bee, the gay butterfly, and the thrifty housekeeper are drawn hither on errands of utility or pleasure. And as the garden flourisheth most fairly beneath bountiful skies, even so doth our literary parterre draw life and beauty from the sunshine of public favour."

Browne's Analogies.

PREFACE.

In closing the labours of another year, the Editor cannot avoid noticing with sincere regret the death of several valuable correspondents. In two instances, this miscellany is the only repository of their literary productions; thus affording satisfactory proof of the utility of our enterprise.

The number of contributors however is increased; and the present volume contains many more original articles than the preceding.

The title of this work will in future be confined to "THE CORNISH MAGAZINE," that its character may appear better defined; and the Editor trusts that the talents of his Friends will be displayed in a manner so as to render it worthy of the

name.

To those who hesitate to assist in the support of this Magazine, he begs to recommend a perusal of the "Essay on Magazines," at Page 186, with the consideration of its being the first and only periodical publication in the County.

In conclusion he presents his best acknowledgments to those Authors, to whose contributions

the work is already so much indebted.
