by Brahman'; (3) आरण्यक ः 'a forester,' 'a wild man,' (4) राज्ञां योग्यं राजन्यकं ' a place fit for kings to live in ' ; मानुश्यकं ‘a country fit for men to live in '; कुरुषु जातः कौरवकः (also कौरव : ' ) 'an inhabitant of Kurn'; युगन्धरेषु जातः यौगन्धरकः (also यौगन्धर: ' ) ' inhabiting Yugandhara'; ( 6 ) पथि जातं पन्थकं ' grown on a way'; ( 7 ) पन्थानं गच्छतीति पथिकः ‘a traveller'; ( 8 ) पूर्वाह्णे भवः पूर्वाह्निकः “happening in the forenoon'; similarly अपराह्णकः 'happening in the afternoon'; ( 9 ) is added to denote 'enmity'; काकोलूकयोः वैरं काकोलूकिका | 'the antipathy between the crow and the owl'; similarly कुत्सकुशिकिका, &c., ( 10 ) when added to words ending in the Tad, affixes signifying ‘the child or the descendant', and to the words उक्षन्, उष्ट्र, उरभ्र ‘a ram’, राजन्, राजन्य, राजपुत्र, वत्स, मनुष्य and अज, it has the sense of a collection of'; उपगूनां समूहः औपगवकम् 'a number of the descendants of Upagn'; औक्षकं 'a herd of cattle' ; राजकं 'a collection of kings, ' राजन्यकं 'an assemblage of kshatriyas;' वात्सकं 'a num ber of calves'; मानुष्यकं भजकं &c. ; ( 11 ) it is also added to क्रम, पद, शिक्षा and मीमांसा in the sense of 'one who has studied them; ' क्रमकः a student who goes through a regular course of study, or one who has studied the kramà arrangement of a sacred text ', मीमांसक 'a student of the mimâmsà philosophy'; &c.

‘relating to, &c.;' आत्मानमधिकृत्य भवः आध्यात्मिकः 'relating to the Supreme spirit,' 'spiritual'; आधिदैविकः ‘relating to or coming from the governing deity,' आधिभौतिकः 'proceeding from the elements,' ऐहलौकिकः 'temporal,' पारलौकिकः &c. - ( 18 ) to क्रय विक्रय, क्रयविक्रय and वस्त्र in the sense of living upon ' ( in these cases no Vrddhi substitute takes place ); भुविकः ' one who lives upon selling things; a trader,' विक्रयिकः, वत्रिक':, 'one who lives upon wages - ( 19 ) to words denoting musical instruments in the sense of 'playing upon ;' &c. मृदंगवादनं fasquey arffum: 'one whose profession it is to play on a tabor;' 60 वैणिकः fr. Vina; similarly वैणविकः; माडुकः or माडुकिक:, झार्झरिकः, &c. - ( 20 ) to पर्प and the remaining words of that group in the sense of 'walking with the assistance of;' पर्पिकः ( पर्पेण चरति इति, येन पीडेन पङ्गवश्वन्ति स पर्पः Sid. Kan.); अश्वेन चराते अश्विकः, रथिक&c; पथा चरति पथिकः 'a traveller; this is also added to words denoting inanimate things; वारिपथिकं दारु 'wood carried on by the force of waters; ' – ( 21 ) to words in cluded in the † group in the sense of 'bears or carries by means of भस्त्रया हरतीति भस्त्रिकः; and optionally, to the word वि वीवधः वि वीवधिक - ( 22 ) to कुसीद and दशैकादशन् in the sense of 'lending on interest'; कुसो दिक्रः 'a usurer;' दशैकादशशकः 'one who lends another ten rupees in order to get back eleven i, e. 'a usurer;' and

( 23 ) to आकर्ष; आकर्षेण चरति आकर्षिकः 'magnetic, attractive'.

इन् – ( 1 ) Added to पूर्व or words ending in पूर्व and to श्राद्ध it has

the sense of ‘done and eaten by' respectively, कृतपूर्वी कर्ट; श्राद्धमनेन भुक्तं श्राद्धी 'one who has eaten, at a Sraddha;' ( 2 ) it is added to a few words, such as खल, कुटुम्ब, &c. in the sense of 'a collection of ' with the feni. term. ई added to it; खलानां समूहः खलिनी '& multitude of thrashing floors or wicked men,' कुटुम्बिनी 'a number of families,' डाकिनी 'a host of female goblins or imps, ' शाकिनी, &c.

ईमन् (इमनच् )—forms abstract nouns when added to the words पृयु,

मृदु, महत्, तनु, पटु, लघु, बहु, साधु, आशु, उरु, गुरु, बहुल,
खण्ड, दण्ड, अकिंचन, चण्ड, बाल, वरस, होड, पाक, मन्द,
स्वादु, ह्रस्व, दीर्घ, प्रिय, वृष, ऋजु, क्षिप्र, क्षुद्र, अणु, दृढ, वृढ,
परिवृढ, कृश, भृश, वक्र, शीत, उष्ण, जड, बधिर, मधुर, पण्डित,
मूर्ख, मूक, स्थिर, and words expressive of colour; before
this term these undergo the same changes as before the
ईयस् of the comparative and are always mas ; as प्रार्थमा
'greatness,' म्रदिमा 'softness,' तनिमा 'thinness' पटिम
‘dexterity,' ‘sharpness, ' &c., बालिमा वत्सिमा, होडिंगा, पा-
किमा 'childhood'; हसिमा, क्षोदिमा, द्रढिमा, उष्णिमा, ऋशिमा,
जडिमा, शुक्तिमा, &c.

इय (घ) – this is added to ( 1 ) क्षत्र in the sense of born of the race of'; क्षत्रियः;-( 2 ) राट्र in the sense of 'relating to '; राष्ट्रियः;

-( 3 ) महेन्द्र in the sense of an oblation offered to';

महेन्द्रियं हविः; – ( 4 ) अय; अभियः 'foremost'.

इक (ईकक् ) – is added to शक्ति and यष्टि in the sense of 'striking

with '; शक्त्या प्रहरतीति शाक्तीकः, 'a spearman ' (also शोक्तिकः), यष्टीकः ' one who strikes with a stick'.

ईन (ख, खञ् ) – ( 1 ) Added to कुल and words ending in कुल it

means ‘born of’, कुले जातः कुलीनः or कौलीनः 'of a good family,' आढयकुलीनः - कौलीनः 'sprung from a noble and rich family'; it is added to—(2) the words and 3

goes

separately or taken together in any order in the sense of 'going’; as पारं गामीति पारीणः 'going over to the other bank'; (when used at the end of a compound it means versed or adept in'; Vide Bhat. II. 46.), अवारीण: 'coming over to this side (of a river, ' &c. ) ' ; पारावारीणः 'one who to both sides or one who crosses the sea' ; अवारपारीणः crossing a river,' &c;-(3) the word in the sense of 'rustic' as ग्रामीण:; - ( 1 ) the words आनन्, विश्वजन and words ending in भोग in the sense of 'beneficial to'; आत्मने हितः आत्मनीनः, विश्वजनीनः; मातृभोगीणः 'fit to be enjoyed by a mother'; पितृभोगीणः &c. ; - ( 5 ) नव changed to नू ; as नवीनः; – (6) अध्वन् in the sense of journeying' अध्वानं गच्छतीति अध्वनीनः a traveller ;' ( 7 ) सर्वान्न and अनुपद in the sense of 'eating' and 'fastened on ' respectively; सर्वान्नीनः 'eating every kind of food'; 'अनुपदं बद्धा अनुपदीना (उपानत्) 'a shoe or boot of the length of the foot'; — (8) तिल and माष in the sense of 'a field of'; as तैलीनं ‘a sesamum field', माषीणं, &c. and to सप्तपद and हियंगु substituted for ह्यः + गोदोह; सप्तभिः पदैः अवाप्यते साप्तपदीनं

seven words'; ह्योगोदोहस्य विकारः हैयंगवीनं " fresh batter or ghee ( Vide Rag. 1. 45; Bhatti V. 12 ).

ईय (छ, छणू) – (1) is addel in the sense of 'of or belonging to, शालायाः अयं शालीयः fr. शाला; मालीयः fr. माला; पाणिनीयः 'belonging to the school of Panini'; it is alded to ( 2 ) स्वसृ and पितृस्वसृ and भ्रातृ in the sense of 'the son of” and ‘relating to, ' respectively; स्वस्रीयः 'a sisetr's son'; पैतृस्वस्रीयः, भ्रात्रीयः 'fraternal' ; - ( 3 ) अश्व in the sense of ‘relating to or a number of, भावीयं ( also आखं) 'relating to horses, a number of horses' ;-(4) when added to the words स्व, जन, पर, देव, राजन्, वेणु and वेत्र a is inserted; स्वकीय 'one's own,' जनकीय 'of the people, ' परकीय, राजकीय, वैणुकीय, 'of bamboo, ' वैत्रकीय.

एण्य - प्रावृषेण्य ' produced in or relating to the rainy season, fr. प्रावृष्.

ए (ढक ढकम. ढम् ) – is chiefly added ( 1 ) to words ending in a fem. affix meaning the child or offspring of; वैनतेयः

‘the son of Vinatà i. e. Garuda'; भागिनेयः 'the son of a sister'; when added to कुलटा meaning 'a poor woman, ' इन is inserted optionally; कौलटेयः or कौलटिनेयः, when कुलटा means 'a harlot' or an ‘adulteress,' एर is optionally substituted for एय; कौलटेयः or कौलटेर: 'the son of an adulteress; it is optionally changed to when added to words denoting a female having some kind of defect', काणेयः – रः 'son of a one-eyed woman', दासेयः —रः 'son of a female slave';- ( 2 ) to words of two syllables ending in इ but not formed by the affix इ ( इम् ), to मण्डूक and words
