$ 315. The feminine of words expressive of relationship is irregular; श्वशुर-श्वश्रू. पिट-माट, &c.

. 316. t The feminine of पति पत्री meaning the sharer with her husband in the fruit of the sacrifices performed by him;' buti if it end a compound it may optionally remain unchanged except when preceded by समान, एक, वीर, पिण्ड, भ्राट, भद्र and पुत्र, &c. before which this change is necessary; गृहपतिः or गृहपत्नी the' mistress of the house; दृढपतिः or दृढपत्नी, वृषलपतिः or वृषलपत्नी, &c. but समानः पतिर्यस्याः सा सपत्नी a co-wife, एकपत्नी, वीरपत्नी, &c.

N. B.-lf there be no compound this change does not take place; as, Arifa yfa: 'the mistress of a village,' and not gett; similarly गवां पतिः &c.

६ 317. I The words अन्तर्वन and पतिवत् form their feminine in ई but have a न prefixed to this ई; अन्तर्वत्नी a woman big with a child.' पतिवत्नी 'a woman whose husband is living.' But if the

§ 320. † A pràtipadika ending in 3 not preceded by y and denoting mankind forms its feminine in 55; e. g. griet: 'a woman of the Kuru country'; but अध्वर्यु: ‘the wife of an Adhvaryu'; also when it does not denote animal-kindt; as अलावूः, कर्कन्धः: except in the case of रज्जु and हनु रज्जुः, हनुः.

'यना क; रम्भोरूः रम्भ इव उरू यस्याः plantain-thighed; करभोरूः havti. thighs (beautifully tapering) like the trunk of an elephant; संहितोरूः haring well-turnnel thighs; शफोरूः, [हितेन सह सहितौ ऊरू वस्याः सा] सहितोरूः, [सहेते इति सही अरू यस्याः सा] सहोरूः ' woman whose thighs are capable of enduring great fatigue or pain'; or 'one having excellent thighs.' § 322.

* The fem. of वृषाकपि, Vishti or Shiva, अमि, कुसित or कुसिद 'a usurer' is formed in ई before which the final voirel of these is changed te) ऐ; वृषाकपायी, अमायी, कुसितायी or कुसिदायी.

§ 323. † The feminine of His optionally formed by adding

§ 324. A pràtiparlika ending in short + ort forms its feminine by the addition of ई, कर्ट की, दण्डिम्-दण्डिनी, शुनी, राज्ञी, परिदिवन-परिदीन्नी; &c.

V. B. Words like स्वस, ननान्दृ. तिस, दुहिट, स्वस, &c. being them. selves feminine do not take this termination.

Exception: * But if a base end in T, applied to roots ending 11 a soft consonant, or if a compound las such a base for its latter member, the fem, is formed by adding only, before which the preceding अन् is dropped, e. g. अवावन् + आ-अधावा (a Brāhmana iroman (ब्रह्माई ) or a female thief); राजयुवा.

$ 326. + A Bahuvrilhi ending in अन् forms its fem. in आ optionally; as सुपर्वन-नुपर्वन्--, बईयज्वन्-बहुयज्वन्-ज्वा, &c.; but if the woril ending sta be such as drops its 37 before the 37 of the Inst. sing. it takes ई also optionally; e. g. बहुराजन्–बहुराजन्राजा-राज्ञी &c.

$ 327. If a Bah. comp. end in ऊधस् it takes the suffix ई in the fem. before which is substituted for the final अस्; पीनं ऊधः यस्याः सा पीनोनी haring a large nulder; कुण्डोनी [ See Rag. I. 84 ]; also when it is preceded by a numeral or an indeclinable; as द्वयुनी, अत्युनी having an udder exceedingly large; but ऊधः अतिक्रान्ता अत्यूधाः.

N. B. The न् of हायन is changed to ण् after त्रि and चतुर् only when it takes ई; चतुर्हायणी बाला; but बिहायना, चतुर्हायना शाला.

$ 328. * When a compound has for its second members Ford denotnig a limb of the body of an animal and having no conjunct consonant preceding its final vowel, the fem. is formed by the addition of आ or ई; अतिकेशा-शी; a woman having abundant hair'; सुकेशा-शी, चन्द्रमुखा खी: bat सुगुल्फा haring beautiful ankles, सुस्तनी or सुस्तना (स्त्री वा प्रतिमा वा); सुमुखा शाला 'an edifice with a beautiful front.'

(a) † If the word, however, denoting the limb, hare more than two syllables, the fem. is formed in आ alone; पृथुजघना, haring large hips; चटुलनयना, &c.

(1) + Also when the first member is one of स, सह, or विद्यमान, the fem. is formed in आ necessarily; सकेशा, अकेशा, विद्यमाननासिका सहनासिका &c.

$ 829. S Of Bah. compounds haring for their last member one of the words नासिका, उदर, भोष्ठ, जंचा. दन्त, कर्ण, शृङ्ग, अङ्ग, गात्र, कण्ठ and पुच्छ the fem. is formed either in आ or ई; तुङ्गनासिका-की; कृशोदरा-री a woman having a slender waist'; बिम्बोष्ठी-ष्ठा ‘with a
