2 Jesus, our Lord, arise,
Scatter our enemies,

And make them fall;

Let thine almighty aid
Our sure defence be made;
Our souls on thee be stay'd;
Lord, hear our call.

3 Come, thou incarnate Word,
Gird on thy mighty sword,
Our prayer attend;

Come, and thy people bless,
And give thy word success:
Spirit of holiness,

On us descend.

4 Come, holy Comforter,
Thy sacred witness bear
In this glad hour:

Thou who Almighty art,
Now rule in every heart,
And ne'er from us depart,
Spirit of power.

5 To the great One and Three
Eternal praises be

Hence, evermore.

His sov'reign majesty
May we in glory see,

And to eternity

Love and adore.

Joy of public worship.

L. M.

REAT God, attend, while Zion sings

Gr The joy that from thy presence springs;

T
To spend one day with thee on earth
Exceeds a thousand days of mirth.

2 Might I enjoy the meanest place
Within thy house, O God of grace,
Not tents of ease, or thrones of power,
Should tempt my feet to leave thy door.
3 God is our sun, he makes our day;
God is our shield, he guards our way
From all assaults of hell and sin,
From foes without, and foes within.

4 All needful grace will God bestow,
And crown that grace with glory too;
He gives us all things, and withholds
No real good from upright souls.

5 O God our King, whose sov'reign sway The glorious hosts of heaven obey, And devils at thy presence flee,

Blest is the man that trusts in thee.

Solemn reverence.

L. M.

TERNAL Power, whose high abode
Becomes the grandeur of a God:
Infinite lengths, beyond the bounds
Where stars revolve their little rounds:

2 Thee while the first archangel sings,
He hides his face behind his wings:
And ranks of shining thrones around
Fall worshipping, and spread the ground.
3 Lord, what shall earth and ashes do?
We would adore our Maker too;
From sin and dust to thee we cry,
The Great, the Holy, and the High.

4 Earth, from afar, hath heard thy fame, And worms have learn'd to lisp thy name: But O! the glories of thy mind

Leave all our soaring thoughts behind.

5 God is in heaven, and men below: Be short our tunes; our words be few: A solemn rev'rence checks our songs, And praise sits silent on our tongues.

Living bread.

L. M.

THY presence, gracious God, afford;

Prepare us to receive thy word: Now let thy voice engage our ear, And faith be mix'd with what we hear. 2 Distracting thoughts and cares remove, And fix our hearts and hopes above; With food divine may we be fed, And satisfied with living bread. 3 To us the sacred word apply, With sov'reign power and energy; And may we, in thy faith and fear, Reduce to practice what we hear. 4 Father, in us thy Son reveal; Teach us to know and do thy will: Thy saving power and love display, And guide us to the realms of day. 29

C. M. Invoking God's presence and blessing. WITHIN thy house, O Lord our God,

W In

In majesty appear;

Make this a place of thine abode,

And shed thy blessings here.

2 As we thy mercy-seat surround,
Thy Spirit, Lord, impart :

And let thy Gospel's joyful sound,
With power reach every heart.

3 Here let the blind their sight obtain; Here give the mourner rest;

Let Jesus here triumphant reign,
Enthroned in every breast.

4 Here let the voice of sacred joy
And fervent prayer arise,

Till higher strains our tongues employ,
In bliss beyond the skies.

How dreadful is this place!
THOU, whom all thy saints adore,
We now with all thy saints agree,
And bow our inmost souls before
Thy glorious, awful Majesty.

2 We come, great God, to seek thy face, And for thy loving kindness wait; And O, how dreadful is this place!

'Tis God's own house, 'tis heaven's gate. 3 Tremble our hearts to find thee nigh; To thee our trembling hearts aspire: And lo! we see descend from high The pillar and the flame of fire.

4 Still let it on the' assembly stay,
And all the house with glory fill:
To Canaan's bounds point out the way,
And lead us to thy holy hill.

5 There let us all with Jesus stand,
And join the gen'ral Church above,
And take our seats at thy right hand,
And sing thine everlasting love.

4th P. M. 886, 886.

God's glorious presence.

ПHOU God of power, thou God of love,
Whose glory fills the realms above,
Whose praise archangels sing,

And veil their faces while they cry,
Thrice Holy, to their God Most High,
Thrice Holy, to their King:-

:

2 Thee as our God we too would claim,
And bless the Saviour's precious name,
Through whom this grace is given;
He bore the curse to sinners due,
He forms their ruin'd souls anew,

And makes them heirs of heaven.
3 The veil that hides thy glory rend,
And here in saving power descend,
And fix thy blest abode;

Here to our hearts thyself reveal,
And let each waiting spirit feel
The presence of our God.

A blessing from God's presence.
REAT Shepherd of thy people, hear
Thy presence now display;

We kneel within thy house of prayer;

O give us hearts to pray.

;

2 The clouds which veil thee from our sight, In pity, Lord, remove;

Dispose our minds to hear aright

The message of thy love.

3 Help us, with holy fear and joy,
To kneel before thy face;

O make us, creatures of thy power,
The children of thy grace.

Faith reveals God's presence.
[OT here, as to the prophet's eye,

NOT

The Lord upon his throne appears;
Nor seraph-tongues responsive cry,
Holy! thrice holy! in our ears:-
2 Yet God is present in this place,
Veil'd in serener majesty;

So full of glory, truth, and grace,
That faith alone such light can see.
