GENERAL EVENING PRAYER.
LORD God Almighty! for the sake of Him who died on the cross to save sinners, have mercy upon us, forgive us all our sins, negligence, and ignorance, and grant us Thy Holy Spirit, that we truly repent them all. Enable us to consider wisely the actions and events of the day now past, and to call upon Thee with lowly, penitent, and obedient hearts, while it is yet now, the accepted time. Teach us the great love of our Redeemer for sinful man, and through Him thy gracious promises of pardon, and help, and mercy. Let not our hearts be hardened within us, but soften them and renew them after Thy law, that we meekly confess our offences against Thee and against our neighbour, in the stedfast purpose of amending our lives. Put away from us all impatience, perverseness, and ill-temper, all offensive sayings and uncharitable thoughts. Deliver us from pride and hypocrisy, from malice, hatred, and envy, from selfishness and discontent: and set each of us to the performance of our several duties with cheerfulness and zeal. Make us active and diligent in our earthly calling, and ever mindful of Thine honour and glory. Preserve us
from all undue anxiety about the things of this world, and grant us strength and wisdom to lay up for ourselves a treasure in heaven. May we upon all occasions do to others as we would they should do to us; and think and speak of others as we would they should think and speak of us.
Work in us and work with us, that we entirely believe and substantially render our religion the main business of every day: and that in humble gratitude we leave under Thy continual providence every person we love and every pursuit we cherish. Make us earnestly thankful to Thee for Thy great goodness to us and to all men, for the means of grace and the hope of glory. Bless our friends and relations. Protect us all in soul and body this night, and of Thy mercy so conduct us through this life, that finally we partake Thy salvation in Jesus Christ. Amen.
Let us pray.
UNTO Thee, Lord God Almighty, would we offer up our thanks through Jesus Christ, that Thou hast brought us unto another Sabbath. In His name would we humbly beseech Thee to give us that due sense of all Thy mercies, that our hearts may ever be unfeignedly thankful; and that throughout this day and every other day it may please Thee to continue each of us on earth, we may earnestly desire Thy Spirit, and honestly endeavour to do Thy will. May that Holy Spirit fill us with contrition for our frequent and grievous offences against Thee, and deliver us from the bondage of sin, and work in us a lowly faith in Jesus Christ; so that our tempers may be softened to acknowledge and confess our utter unworthiness, and that we may look to the cross of Him who is the propitiation for our sins, and may humbly and entirely purpose availing ourselves of that assistance for which we cry out unto Thee. Let us not be wise in our own eyes, but walk in Thy fear and depart from evil. And forasmuch as of Thy great goodness Thou hast baptized us into Thy holy Church, grant that we may indeed die unto sin, and neglect not the promise of eternal life revealed to us in Him at once the Author and Finisher of our faith. Have mercy upon us for His sake, and suffer us not at any time to do despite unto Thy Holy Spirit. On this day, more especially set apart for Thy service, grant us in Thy Church an humble and teachable disposition, and preserve us from all wanderiag thoughts, all perverse and unprofitable reasonings. Take from every heart all ignorance, hardness, and contempt of Thy word. Receive our supplications for all estates of men in Thy holy Church, that every member of the same in his vocation and ministry may truly serve Thee. We would humbly implore Thy blessing upon this household, and upon all our friends and relations. Give unto each of them, and unto each of us, grace to put off the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and to put on the new man, which is created after Thee, that at the second coming of our Redeemer in power and great glory to judge the world, we may be found acceptable in Thy sight, through His mediation; through whom, unto Thee, Lord God Almighty, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.
O MOST merciful God, who according to the multitude of Thy mercies dost so put away the sins of those who truly repent, that Thou rememberest them no more, have compassion upon us for the sake of Thy Son! have compassion upon us miserable sinners, who most earnestly desire pardon and forgiveness in His name. Renew in us whatsoever has been decayed by the fraud and malice of the devil, or by our own carnal wills and frailty. Cause us to bear Thy lovingkindness, for we would trust in Thee, to know the ways wherein we should walk, for unto Thee would we lift up our souls. 0 Thou that takest pleasure in them that fear Thee, in them that hope in Thy mercy, cause us, we implore Thee, to understand all Thy graciousness in Christ, through whom we have the means of grace and the hope of glory. Work in us and work with us, that our hearts may sincerely acknowledge all Thy goodness and lovingkindness, and our lips be filled with thankfulness and earnest praise. Enable us by constant diligence in our earthly calling, and zealous labour to do Thy will, so to redeem our time, that we be continually advancing and advanced along the path which leads to salvation. Make us deeply feel
