When labouring under frequent indisposition, his earnest petitions for strength to fulfil the duties of his parish, are frequent.

"O Lord! Thou knowest that my heart is in thy service; suffer not, therefore, I beseech Thee, the infirmities of my body to press down my better part-but grant unto me that degree of health and strength, which may enable me, by thy grace, to perform the great duties of my calling, with that zeal and earnestness which ought to mark the character of a Christian minister-even so, grant O Lord, for thy dear Son's sake. Amen.

"The cross which is laid upon us must be borne -if we are impatient, we lose the benefit but if we accept it willingly, and bear it with patience, meekness, and resignation, it is regarded as equivalent to a punishment of our own inflicting.'-Good Bishop Wilson.

"Thy grace, O Lord, is sufficient for me.-O! let thy grace be made perfect in my weakness: suffer me not, O Lord, to fall from Thee; for Thee alone do I desire to serve, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer. Amen."

Mysteries in religion, were never intended to exercise our reason, so much as to prove our faith. But the plain promises of the Gospel are sufficient for the plain Christian and he has to thank God that they are so plain, as not to require labour or pains to understand them-and that in understanding them to good effect, his great comfort consists."

Prayers and Thanksgivings for private use—1778.

"O Almighty God, who hast of Thy great mercy promised to hear the petitions of them that ask in thy Son's name; incline thine ear to us, who now make our supplications unto Thee for all those blessings, spiritual and temporal, which Thou, in thy wisdom, shall judge to be most fitting for us. Pour into our hearts, O Lord, such a due sense of Thy goodness and our own unworthiness, that our gratitude and our humility may be found acceptable in Thy sight. Take from us, blessed Lord, that ignorance, hardness of heart, and spiritual blindness, which characterise the natural man; and grant unto us, unworthy as we are, such a portion of thy Holy Spirit, that we may be enabled to embrace and hold fast that salvation, which Thou, of thine infinite mercy, hast prepared for us, through the

mediation of thy blessed Son; by crucifying the "old man," and "by walking before Thee in newness of life." Suffer not, we beseech Thee, the bewitching temptations of this world, to draw us off from that serious attention which is due to eternal things—but grant that amidst all the changes and chances of this mortal life," our hearts may surely there be fixed, where alone true joys are to be found." Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls; that we being defended by Thy most gracious and ready help, may be able to triumph over all our enemies, ghostly and bodily; and finally, by Thy mercy, obtain everlasting life, through the merits of our blessed Saviour and Redeemer, Jesus Christ the righteous. Amen."

"O Lord, our heavenly Father, who hast commanded us most conscientiously to discharge each duty that we owe one to another, from those peculiar bonds in which, by Thy providence, we are united-grant unto us, we most humbly beseech Thee, a constant sense of these duties, and likewise of those, which belong to the station of life, in which we are severally placed; that through Thy grace we may be enabled to do every thing that is pleasing in Thy sight; by walking before Thee in all holy and godly conversation-by evincing a tender and constant affection towards each other, and towards all those with whom we are particularly connected-and by abounding in brotherly love and charity towards all mankind.

Grant this, O merciful Father, for thy dear Son
Jesus Christ's sake. Amen."

Thanksgiving.

Accept, O Lord, our humble tribute of praise and thanksgiving for the numberless instances of Thy goodness, which have been from time to time vouchsafed unto us; for Thy preservation and protection of us from day to day--but more especially for that stupendous instance of Thy love, in the redemption of the world by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Grant, O Lord, that a due sense of these mercies towards us may become so apparent in our lives and actions, that we may be enabled with confidence to look up to Thee, the Author and Giver of every good gift, for a continuance of these blessings, in such manner and degree as Thou shalt judge most fitting for us. Continue to us, gracious Lord, thy protection this day (or this night). Let Thy good providence so watch over, defend, and follow us, that Thou mayest be to us a never failing ground of hope and consolation, strength and confidence, in this world; and become the endless theme of our praise and adoration, in the world to come. We commend, O gracious Lord, to thy fatherly goodness, mercy, and protection, those tender infants which Thou hast given to us-sanctify them, we humbly pray Theeand so fill them with the graces of thy Holy Spirit, that they may ever be in the number of Thy

faithful and devoted children. Accept, merciful Lord, this our humble and imperfect service; and those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, vouchsafe to grant unto us, for the worthiness of Him, who in compassion to our ignorance and infirmities,'' hath taught and commanded us, when we pray,

"O Lord God! of whose gift alone it cometh that we do unto Thee true and laudable service, give us grace to perceive our absolute need of instruction in righteousness; and to depend, in reading the word of God and in prayer, upon Christ, who is the wonderful Counsellor, to reveal to us by his spirit all things that pertain unto life and godliness. And as thou knowest the frailty and infirmity of our nature, lead us, O Lord! to the Rock of Faith, that we may not yield to any doubts or fears which may at any time assault us; but in all things, and at all times, cleave steadfastly to our Head and our Redeemer. And as an evidence that we do indeed trust in thy dear Son, may we feel our souls endued with strength from on high, to walk uprightly, to work righteousness, and in all things to adorn the Gospel of Christ. Grant us, Lord, such faith in his power, his love, and all-sufficient mediation, as may expel out of our hearts
