V. OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Promises of the Holy Spirit, and gift of-Operations, influence, teachings-Deity of Resisting and grieving-Inspiring the Scriptures-Inviting to salvation. (Note) In the texts marked thus *, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are particularly mentioned.

1. Was the Holy Spirit promised in the Old Testament?

This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel, And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my spirit upon all flesh. (2 Ac. 16, 17.) (2 Joel 28 to 32.)

2. What did John the Baptist say as to the descent of the Holy Spirit on Christ?

I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him, and I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. (1 John, 32, 33.)

3. Did Christ encourage his disciples to expect the Holy Spirit?
