subjects, will fairly justify my adopting the custom in the present instance. To those who have aided me in accomplishing my object, my best thanks are tendered, for they are justly due. The paths of Parnassus are many; if the Olympian be but little trodden, it is because it is reserved for the gallant and the gentle. This is the great difficulty that all who have engaged in sporting works, have had to contend against-one that I should have found fatal, but for the resources of private friendship. A desire to extend a taste for the healthful and manly sports of my country, first suggested to me the idea of this work. If it serve that end, the attempt is crowned; at all events I shall be consoled with the hope that it may furnish, to the sportsman, if little that is novel, at least some agreeable reminiscences; and prove, to the lover of light literature, not altogether devoid of interest.
