Present: Representatives Mrazek (presiding), Hochbrueckner, and Downey. OPENING STATEMENT OF HON. ROBERT J. MRAZEK, A REPRESENTATIVE IN CONGRESS FROM THE STATE OF NEW YORK. ON BEHALF OF HON. G.V. (SONNY) MONTGOMERY, CHAIRMAN, COMMITTEE ON VETERANS' AFFAIRS Mr. MRAZEK. On behalf of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, I would like to convene this official hearing of the U.S. House of Representatives. We are meeting today to discuss the important issues affecting the Veterans' Administration hospital care system. We have some very important testimony that we will be receiving today. I think it would be very helpful and illuminating for those who have come to the hearing, as well as through our official record of this hearing, to inform the other Members of Congress as to the basic needs that are going to have to be met in the future with respect to the delivery of medical care for our veterans' population in the United States. The official record will be kept open for 5 days so that those of you who have written statements that you would like to submit will have an opportunity to do so. They will become part of the official record of this hearing by the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs. We have two members of the Veterans' Committee who are hoping to be with us a little later. As many of you are aware, we had some unprecedented fog conditions this morning and Congressman John Rowland from Connecticut, as well as Congressman Morrison are hoping to be with us today at the hearing. They are presently grounded in Connecticut, but will hopefully be here a little later. The first thing that I would like to do is ask everyone to rise for the Pledge of Allegance. [Pledge recited.] |
