IN compiling this little work, endeavours have been used to collect all the interesting particulars extant relating to Thorne, from the works of others, from the few manuscript documents that exist, as well as from the kind communications of those friends who have been disposed toassist in the design. And as it is expected that the history of this town and neighbourhood will principally come into the hands of those whose connexion with, and local knowledge of the district, may be supposed to give them an interest in whatever relates to it further preface or apology for the introduction of matter, which in the cool judgment of a stranger might appear unimportant, will be unnecessary.
