RECOMMENDATIONS.

HE General Convention of the YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATIONS of the United States and British Provinces, convened at Indianapolis last June, passed the following:

RESOLVED "That in the Hymn and Tune Book [SONGS OF DEVOTION] prepared at the suggestion of our last Convention, at Portland, by W. H. DOANE, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and published by Messrs. BIGLOW & MAIN, of New York City, we find a work not only admirably adapted for use in our Young Men's Christian Conventions and Associations, but eminently fitted for Devotional Exercises and Social Meetings, and we recommend and urge its adoption for general use.

From Rev. J. H. RAYMOND, President of Vassar College.

"I have examined 'SONGS OF DEVOTION,' and among a multitude of similar works which I have looked through, I know of none in which the proportion of thoroughly good selections seemed to me so large, or where there was so happy a combination of classical correctness and artistic excellence, with popular feeling and spirit. Every page is singable, and yet the prevailing taste is pure and high. If my associates agree with me, we shall adopt it for our social worship at 'Vassar' without delay."

"POUGHKEEPSIE, N. Y., July 15th, 1970."

From Rev. R. S. STANTON, President Miami University, Oxford, 0.

"My attention has been called to your 'SONGS OF DEVOTION' by an esteemed Pastor of Cincinnati. I am highly pleased with it. It is just what every Pastor needs to promote congregational singing. The arrangement, the variety of hymns and tunes, the whole 'getting up,' and the mechanical execution are well adapted to this. I trust it may find great favor among all those who love to sing God's praise in any gathering of His people." OXFORD, O., July 28, 1870.

From Rev. L. J. EVANS, Lane Seminary.

"I have examined with some care the 'SONGS OF DEVOTION,' and have found it to be a very choice collection, and especially well suited for the uses for which it was designed. For general purposes of social devotion it is unexcelled. It will doubtless win favor wherever it is found."

From C. C. WESTON, Esq., Washington, D. C.

"I have given 'SONGS OF DEVOTION' a thorough examination. I think it is just the Book for Social Meetings. We have introduced it in our Church-E Street Baptist."

From Rev. HENRY D. MOORE, Pastor of Vine Street Cong. Ch., Cincinnati, Ohio. "I feel justified in saying, after examining with some thoroughness the Hymns and Tunes of 'SONGS OF DEVOTION,' that I know of no better or more serviceable book of sacred song than it. I heartily comm nd the book to churches, families and schools for their adoption in the service of praise; and I devoutly pray the blessing of God to attend its use."

From the Rev. R. JEFFERY, D. D., Pastor 9th Street Baptist Ch., Cincinnati, Ohio.

"The 'SONGS OF DEVOTION' need only to be known to become a favorite with all lovers of sacred song. The selection, with excellent discrimination, preserves many of the hymns and tunes that have become dear to all Christian hearts, and presents several original pieces which, instead of being ephemeral, will take a permanent place in the literature of hymns and tunes."

From Rev. A. J. ROWLAND, late President of Mt. Auburn Young Ladies' Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio.

"I have carefully examined 'SONGS OF DEVOTION,' and do not hesitate to pronounce it the very best book for social worship that has come under my notice. For service, at the opening of schools, for family prayers, and for the devotional meetings of Christian people, I think it altogether admirable. Its cheapness is also a very great item in its favor, as this brings a large quantity of our very best music within the reach of the poorest church. I wish the book and its author most abundant success."

PREFACE.

HIS collection is presented to the Christian public with the single desire that it may promote in some way the efficiency and usefulness of those who are working for the advancement of Christ's Kingdom. We would call attention to some of its chief features:

1. The hymns have been prepared and selected with unusual care; many original hymns are presented, composed by the best writers; other compilations, as well as the collections of individual authors, have been critically examined; and it is believed that there will be found in this volume only such hymns as will be approved by the entire body of the Protestant Church. The compiler has kept constantly in view the needs, not of a sect, but of a Church universal. The selections are accordingly adapted to the wants of all, and can be used by all.

2. Special attention has been paid to the selection of the music. Those grand old tunes used by the fathers of the Church, and which have been endeared by use and association to the Christian believer, have a prominent place in this collection. Besides these will be found those of modern date, the merits of which are now generally acknowledged, and which will come to be regarded, at no distant day, as among the classical compositions of the Church. Other tunes will be found which are now for the first time published. Most of these are by wellknown composers with whose names the public is already familiar, and they are presented in the confident expectation that they will be assigned an honorable and permanent position.

3. The scope of the work is broad and comprehensive. The compiler has sought to adapt both hymns and tunes to all the needs and wants of the Christian. Every department of Christian labor, it is believed, has been completely provided for. The editor has received in his work the thoughtful aid of Christian laymen of large experience, and he has availed himself of their suggestions and advice. The whole field has been carefully gone over, and the publishers feel assured that in its adaptation to Christian wants, "SONGS OF DEVOTION" can safely challenge comparison with any other volume now before the public.

4. To the present work the editor has brought all his experience, and on it he has spent much time and thought.

Thanks are due to the representatives of the late Wm. B. BRADBURY, Drs. MASON & HASTINGS, ROBT. LOWRY and others, for permission to use the music found under their respective names. Those bearing the monogram are by the

Editor.

SONGS OF DEVOTION

"Whoso offereth praise, glorifieth me." Ps. 50, Verse 23.

OLD HUNDRED. L. M.

1. Be thou, O God, ex-alt- ed high; And as thy glo-ry fills the sky,

So let it be on earth displayed, Till thou art here, as there, obeyed.

1 Be thou, O God, exalted high;
And as thy glory fills the sky,
So let it be on earth displayed,
Till thou art here, as there, obeyed.
2 O God, my heart is fixed; 'tis bent
Its thankful tribute to present,
And, with my heart, my voice I'll raise
To thee, my God, in songs of praise.
3 Thy praises, Lord, I will resound,
To all the listening nations round;
Thy mercy highest heaven transcends;
Thy truth beyond the clouds extends.

4 Be thou, O God, exalted high;
And as thy glory fills the sky,
So let it be on earth displayed,
Till thou art here, as there, obeyed.
2.
Doxology.
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow,
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

L. M.

3 The Sovereign Jehovah. L. M. 1 Before Jehovah's awful throne, Ye nations bow with sacred joy; ́ ́ Know that the Lord is God alone;

He can create, and he destroy. 2 His sovereign power without our aid, And when, like wandering sheep, we strayed, Made us of clay, and formed us men; He brought us to his fold again.

3 We are his people; we his care;

Our souls, and all our mortal frame; What lasting honors shall we rear,

Almighty Father, to thy name?

4 We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs,
High as the heaven our voices raise;
And earth, with her ten thousand tongues,
Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise.

5 Wide as the world is thy command,
Vast as eternity thy love:
Firm as a rock thy truth shall stand,
When rolling years hall cease to move.
