THE Actions of the great Statesman, whose Life I have attempted to write, were not only the Wonder of his own Age, but have afforded a large Field for the Difquifition of fucceeding Times. And therefore I have prefumed to lay them before so impartial a Judge as your Excellency, able at once to discover his Errors, and at the fame time generous enough to acknowledge his Virtues.
