In 657 Hilda moved to Whitby, to found (or re-found) the abbey there, and took
Elfleda with her. Whitby was a double monastery; its influence spread far and
wide, and it was famous for learning and as the site of the Synod of Whitby in 663
Under his rule the abbey achieved outstanding splendour, and as abbot he
would have been involved in all the religious and political affairs of the diocese.
He was a close friend of the Cid and of three noted contemporary abbots: St
