St Meletius of Antioch, Bishop (381) Meletius played an important part in the
tangled affairs of the Church in the East during the long-drawn-out Arian
controversies and power struggles. He was born in Melitene and came from a
braced Arianism, invaded Italy and secured large parts of it, establishing a
dukedom somewhat loosely attached to their northern kingdom as far south as
Benevento. Here they destroyed the existing bishoprics. By the 660s, however,
ceived with honour and distinguished himself for his outright opposition to
Arianism. As bishop of Antioch he had oversight of neighbouring dioceses, to
which he appointed bishops capable of instructing and encouraging their flocks.
