PREFACE.

TWENTY-ONE YEARS AGO we made our first essay in the work of compiling a little Magazine for Children.

TWENTY-ONE YEARS! how distant they seem when we look forward-how near when we look backward!

TWENTY-ONE YEARS gone! They remind us of many days and nights of anxiety and laboursweetened however, always sweetened, and cheered too, by the reflection that we were aiming to do good among the young. Good, we have reason to believe, has been done. To HIM who disposed us to the work, opened our way, and blessed us in doing it, be all the praise!

TWENTY-ONE YEARS to come! Ah! we may never see them here. Before another twenty-one years shall have passed over, the fingers now writing these lines, will, probably, be mouldering to dust.

Such are the thoughts which now flit across our mind as we reflect on the twenty-one years that we have been engaged in this delightful employment.

During that period hundreds, and thousands, yea hundreds of thousands of these little books have been written, printed, and circulated. Who can calculate the amount of good which, we may humbly and cheerfully hope, has been accomplished by them under the Divine Blessing? Eternity will reveal the whole.
