PREFACE.

THE two parts of Henry IV. have been chosen because young people may be more inclined to read Shakespeare if they have some experience of his comedy as well as of his tragedy. Much has necessarily been omitted; it is hoped, however, that what remains will inculcate the main drift of Shakespeare's great moral.

The real history of the time is given in the introduction; the variations from it are marked. A summary is given of each scene and act; and in the notes full explanations are added of all difficult words and sentences. The passages where the meaning is obvious are left to the teacher.
