DESCRIPTION OF THE PLATES.

PLATE I.

FIGURE 1.-Walking dress.-Chiné dress. A corsage fitting closely to the shape, rather high in the neck; the sleeves long and tight to the arms. The skirt is extremely ample with a gimp flounce and fringe at the termination of the skirt as well as another halfway up, assuming a serpentine form, camail cape with similar edging; bonnet of tulle with drooping feathers. FIGURE 2.-Promenade dress.-Levantine dress. The corsage made moderately high and slightly sloped at the ceinture, close fitting long sleeves with ruffles at the end; the skirt without addition or ornament, a double cape finishes the dress. The bonnet in Levantine has bouquet ornament and a lace violette.

FIGURE 3-Evening dress.-Muslin dress. The corsage which is demi-montant edged with scolloped lace; a berthé cut square and with a frilled edging is united with a rosette; the sleeves are short and in bouffans. The skirt has the addition of double flounces with an intervening one broader than the other. The cap is embellished with ribbons, hanging in long pendant ends.

FIGURE 4.-Promenade dress.-Gros de Tours pelisse. Cut with a deep indent in front of the corsage, and having a treble trimming; the sleeves are long, close and two rows of frilling. The lower part is united by noeuds of satin, running down the entire length; the edge has a treble row of frilling as a border. The drawn bonnet has bouquet ornaments on the crown.

The First Half Figure is in poult de soie and has a scolloped edging; in other respects plain.

The Second Half Figure is in levantine, for an evening dress, demi montant, in drapings at top and pointed at the ceinture. The bonnets are in silk and tulle, with ribbon ornaments and rosettes and bouquets,

The caps in tulle, with long barbes in blond.

PLATE 2.

FIGURE 1.-Mourning costume. Chali dress. The corsage is made high at the shoulders, in the style of a fall, with colored satin border; the sleeve is full. The skirt has insertions of colored satin as flounces; long pendant ribbons of the same hang from the ceinture. The coiffure is embellished with a large fancy pin.

FIGURE 2.-Evening dress. Satin dress. Muslin pelerine, with lace edging; short sleeve, moderately close. A tablier, rounded, with fringe edging is added. The skirt is full and plain. The hair is without ornament and disposed in ringlets.

FIGURE 3.-Evening dress. Poult de soie dress. The corsage decolleté, and edged with a small border of scolloped lace, laid in gathers; the sleeves short and close. The skirt is ornamented at the lower part with a satin band which forms a suitable flounce; an upper jupe is cut in the robe style and has a similar ornament placed near the edge. The cap is embellished with a garland of small flowers.

FIGURE 4.-Mourning dress. Chiné cress. the corsage is made demi-montant, and with a scolloped edging; camaille cape with gimp border; tight sleeves. The skirt is ornamented with embroidery in the usual style. Satin capote, with bouquets. The First Half Figure of satin has a lace fall, the sleeves are long and ornamented in the upper part.

The Second Half Figure is in barigé, with a fall of the same material, the sleeve which is long, ornamented in a corresponding

manner.

The capotes, à caulisses and plain have a variety of decorations ; the barbe with lace edging, bouquets and feathers are the principal.

A tulle cap has bouquet and ribbon ornaments and blond edging.

FIGURE 1.-Out door dress.-Levantine dress. The corsage made perfectly tight fitting, and having a series of ornaments commencing at the upper part, proceeding down the centre: the sleeves are composed entirely of similar ornaments, the terminating series of which forms the cuff, to which is added a lace ruffle. The skirt is plain with the exception of a continuation of the above ornaments extending to the termination. The capote of moire, with Paradise feathers.

FIGURE 2.-Evening dress.-Shot silk costume. The corsage is tastefully decorated with a puce appliqué which has a lace edging, following the windings of the corsage which is straight at the termination. The sleeves are double with a similar applicatiou at the the extremity of the outside, one which does not extend to the hand; the inner sleeve is continued full to the hand and terminates in a ruffle. The skirt is ornamented with three different flounces, each having two double edgings of lace The capote is ornamented with ribbon of the same material, which is poult de soie, and has a lace barbe.

FIGURE 3.-Walking dress.-Redingote of Gros d'Afrique. It unites in front of the corsage, whence a frill edging is visible, on the upper part a lace collar is also introduced. The sleeve is double, the inner one of muslin and extending to the hand, which the other terminates at about two thirds of the distance. The capote is in organdi and has ribbon coques.

FIGURE 4.-Walking dress.-Chiné dress. The upper part having a corsage appliqué embroidered; tight sleeves with no ornament except a trifling addition to the upper portion. The skirt is in folds, very broad, which serve as flounces and beaded by guipure. The capote is ornamented by a garland of flowers. The First Half Figure has the sleeve fulled all over with epaulette ornaments. The upper part has an embroidered habit shirt extending slightly over the edge.

The Second Half Figure has a cape with deep edging of black lace; the sleeve the same.

The bonnets are in tulle, satin and moire, and are trimmed with feathers, flowers and ribbons.

FIGURE 1. Walking dress. Balgarine dress. The corsage made very high in the shoulder, with drapings laid longitudinally. The sleeve is close and long; the skirt plain and full. The bonnet of crape has a long pendant feather.

FIGURE 2.-Promenade dress. Poult de soie dress. The corsage is made with a frilling running down the front towards the ceinture, where it meets in the V form. The sleeves are similarly ornamented, close and long. The skirt is embellished with two flounces. The bonnet in watered silk has a feather and nœuds.

FIGURE 3.- Walking dress. Redingote of gros de Naples, the upper portion having an embroidered square cape and small collar to match. The sleeve embellished with buttons, the cuff turned up and similarly embroidered. The front of the dress is decorated in a corresponding manner throughout the entire length. Silk capote with garland of flowers.

The bonnets are in Levantine, in velvet and satin. Feathers and flowers form the prevailing ornaments. The same materials as the dress are also used.
