THE PRAYER.

Especially proper for Persons having no fixed home.

Compiled from the Primitive Liturgies.

ALMIGHTY God, whose name is great, and in every place incense, sacrifice, and oblation are offered unto it, we call upon thee, the helper of the helpless, the hope and Saviour of all who are tossed to and fro. O Thou, who art everywhere, and fillest all things, who art all things to all men, for thou knowest all their habitations and their several necessities; We pray thee be now and at all times a guide to us [and all who travel] whatsoever way we pursue. Be unto us an helper, strengthener, and supporter. Preserve us in our pilgrimage through this life, and direct us into the way of salvation in the Communion of thy one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church which is spread over the face of the whole earth, and give to us and every Christian soul [especially any in trial or affliction] thy pity, pardon, and refreshment, and keep us in all our ways, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE THANKSGIVING.

In the ordinary Thanksgiving of the Day insert the following words.

Especially for that thou hast brought us thus far in safety on our journey, and preserved us from the perils and dangers thereof.

¶ Add the Prayer, O most mighty, (p. 239,) if there has been any special preservation from danger.

After a Journey.

THE Lord our God, he it is that brought us.. and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed. Josh. xxiv.

COLLECT.

"Prevent us, O Lord," &c. (p. 234.)

THE THANKSGIVING.

The words "especially for that thou hast brought us in peace and safety (to the end of our journey or) (back to our home and household) again to unite in supplication and thanksgiving before thee" may be inserted in the daily Thanksgiving, or else the following compilation from the Primitive Liturgies may be used. This is also appropriate as a Thanksgiving after any great mercy, or on the accomplishment of any great object.

GOD the Maker of all visible and invisible

beings, the treasure of eternal happiness, the fountain of life and immortality, to whom the heavens sing praise, and all their powers, the sun and moon, and the whole choir of stars, the earth and sea, and all that are therein, Jerusalem the heavenly assembly and church of the first born that are written in heaven, the spirits of just men and prophets, the souls of martyrs, and apostles, angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, and all dominions and powers; it is meet and right and our bounden duty, that we should praise and bless, worship, glorify, and give thanks to thee, for thou art God, ineffable, inconceivable, invisible, incomprehensible, from everlasting to everlasting, the same thou and thine only-begotten

Son, and Holy Spirit. Thou broughtest us out of nothing, and didst raise us again when fallen by disobedience, and seek to bring us to heaven, and to an inheritance in thy kingdom. [And thou suppliest all our wants and now] Here mention the speFor these and all other thy mercies, cial mercy, as above, whether known to us or unknown, or otherwise. we give thanks to thee, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and with all these blessed powers cry out and say, Holy art thou, most Holy, and Holy is thy glory, Lord God of Hosts, henceforth and for evermore. Amen.

In time of Danger.

The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble, and he knoweth them that trust in him. Nahum i.

Collect, "O God the Protector," (p. 228.)

This Collect was said aloud by K. Geo. III. at the mo-
ment of a public attempt on his life.

(Add in the Suffrages,)

O Lord, arise, help us.

And deliver us for thy mercy's sake.

THE PRAYER.

O MOST glorious and gracious Lord God, who dwellest in heaven, but beholdest all things below; at whose command the winds blow, and lift up the waves of the sea, and who stillest the rage thereof. We thy creatures, but miserable

sinners, do in this our great distress cry unto thee for help: Save, Lord, or else we perish. We confess, when we have been safe, and seen all things quiet about us, we have forgot thee our God, and refused to hearken to the still voice of thy word, and to obey thy commandments: But now we see, how terrible thou art in all thy works of wonder; the great God to be feared above all : And therefore we adore thy Divine Majesty, acknowledging thy power, and imploring thy goodness. Help, Lord, and save us for thy mercy's sake, that we, being delivered from this distress, may live to serve thee, and to glorify thy Name all the days of our life. Hear, Lord, and save us, for the infinite merits of our blessed Saviour, thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

AFTER AN ESCAPE FROM DANGER, OR ON RECOVERY FROM SICKNESS, (see p. 255,) OR DELI

VERANCE FROM ANY GREAT TRIAL.

This is the Lord's doing. Ps. cxviii.

Collect, "O God the Protector," (p. 228.)

THE PRAYER.

O MOST mighty and gracious good God, thy mercy is over all thy works, but in special manner hath been extended toward us, whom thou hast so mercifully preserved. Thou hast shewed

us terrible things, that we might see how powerful and gracious a God thou art: how able and ready to help them that trust in thee. We therefore bless and glorify thy Name, for this thy mercy in saving us, when we were ready to perish. And, we beseech thee, make us as truly sensible now of thy mercy, as we were then of the danger; and give us hearts always ready to express our thankfulness, not only by words, but also by our lives, in being more obedient to thy holy commandments. Continue, we beseech thee, this thy goodness to us, that we, whom thou hast saved, may serve thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of our life; through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

The family should also return thanks in the public congregation, and make suitable thank-offerings at the earliest opportunity.

Family Benediction,

Which may be said, standing, at the end of the Family Prayer, by the Master of the Family, avoiding its use on Penitential and Fast Days, and on all days when the Pastoral Benediction is expected in the Public Service. (See 1 Thess. v.)

The very God of peace,

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost,
Be with you, bless you, and sanctify you;
And I pray God

Preserve your spirits, souls, and bodies
Blameless unto the coming of
our Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen.
