PREFACE.

IN issuing the ESSEX HALL HYMN AND TUNE BOOK the Committee of the Sunday School Association are desirous of meeting a long-felt and widely-expressed want. The main object of the present work is to provide tunes for the Hymn Book published by the Association. The great advantage of having always at hand a collection of suitable tunes, especially for the peculiar metres, is obvious to everyone. The chief purpose of the compilers has been to furnish tunes adapted to the words, and sufficiently melodious to attract young people.

The Committee are indebted to a large circle of friends for suggesting and supplying many of the tunes included in the book, and they would particularly mention the names of Mr. William Tate and Mr. George Callow, who gave much valuable time and thought to the preliminary work of selecting and preparing a large quantity of music. Mr. J. Westwood Tosh has bestowed great care and labour upon the book; he helped in editing the greater portion of Part I, and the whole of Part II, besides giving careful attention to the expression marks, and to the compilation of the indices. Every effort was made to procure familiar and popular tunes already in existence before composing new ones, but owing to various causes, it was found necessary to prepare several fresh tunes; and the Committee believe that many of these will soon become favourites with the children.
