without tapping; white swelling, king's evil, jaundice, and ulcerated wounds, without plaister; gravel and stone without cutting; cancer, leprosy, and fistulas, without surgical operation: and also wens on any part of the body cured in a most surprising manner. Fits in the old and young, if of ever so long standing, effectually cured by the virtues of herbs. Cold caught in lying-in, which brings on trembling in the nerves, swimming in the head, shortness of breath, coughs, and many other disorders, too tedious to enumerate in a bill." This learned address concludes with the following N. B. Patients unacquainted with the nature of their complaints, by sending their morning urine, the doctor will honourably inform them whether curable or not. The doctor will publish monthly, a list of his cures; and no letters received, unless post paid. "On Saturdays only, advice is given gratis."!! Another "Medical Institution" is established in the neighbourhood of Leicester Square, for the same benevolent purpose of suppressing quackery; and a grand West London Medical Establishment by Drs. C. and J. Jordan !! We have repeatedly directed the attention of our Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons to these establishments. The open manner, in which quackery is now carried on in this metropolis, and the impositions which are daily practised, by pretenders, on the unwary with impunity, is not only disgraceful to the colleges, but to the legislature. Why have the colleges not inquired into their qualifi- | cations to exercise the healing art within their jurisdiction, and by what authority they style themselves Doctors? We lately met with a weak man, possessed of a little property, who took medicine from a pretender, to the amount of nearly two hundred pounds in the course of a few months, for a complaint which existed only in his imagination!! Others have been induced to pay excessive demands, sooner than have their names exposed by law proceedings, which some pettifogging attorneys had threatened. The charges of the advertising pretender are twenty times higher than those of the regular profession; for where the latter charges a shilling, the former charges a pound. The demand of ten pounds from a servant is by them considered very moderate for an advance; and many a servant has even pawned his wearing apparel, or robbed his master, to raise money to get cured of a disease, which was probably only imaginary; but which, for the purpose of extorting money, was not only confirmed by the learned doctors, but the ravages it would commit on the constitution greatly magnified. It is indeed cruel in the extreme to allow these wretches to tamper with the lives and happiness of the ignorant with impunity. We hope that the police magistrates will direct a little of their attention to these "medical institutions," established for the prevention of quackery, and the cure of dangerous disorders!!! We shall continue our remarks on modern quackery in the next number.
