Every Action of the Son, both in making the World, and in all other his Operations; is only the Exercife of the Father's Power, communicated to him after an ineffable man

Since our Lord (faith Irenæus) is the Only Teacher of Truth; we should learn of Him, that the Father is Above All; For, faith he, my Father is greater than I.

Again: He of Himself freely and by his own Power, made and formed and perfected all things: This is the Only God, who made all things; the Only [warтoxoTwę,] Supreme over all, and Father of all:

Now how God is faid to felf, which he does by his Son and Spirit, he thus explains: God (faith he) did not want the miniftry of Angels, in making thofe things which he determined to make: For he has Hands of his own always prefent with him, even his Word and Wisdom, his Son and Spirit, by and in whom he

does all things according to his own Will. [His meaning is, that the Son and Spirit exercise the Power and execute the Will of God, just as a Man's own hands execute his Power and Will. Like the Similitude. which St Paul makes in another cafe; that the Spirit of God knows the Things of God, as perfectly as a Man knows his own Mind.]. Again: By the Hands of the Father, that is, by the Son and Holy Spirit, is Man made after the Likeness of God.

Again: We believe (faith he) in One True God, the Maker of Heaven and Earth and of all things which are therein, by Jefus Chrift the Son of God.

And again: He who is the Supreme God over All, made and formed all things by his Word, which (faith he just before) is our Lord Jefus Christ.

All; And the Son, if we may fo Speak, is the Operat ing Power of the Father. [His Meaning is the fame, as Irenaus's in calling him The Hand of the Father.]

And Origen: The immediate Maker of the World, and as it were Builder of it in his own Perfon, is the Son or Word of God: But the Father, who appointed his Son or Word to make the World, is the Principal Author of it.

And Eufebius: The Evangelist, when he might have faid, All things were made by him as the efficient Caufe; (and again, The world was made By Him ;) did not fo exprefs it, by Him as the Efficient Caufe; but By [or Through] him as the Miniftring Caufe: that

And Bafil: Yet lest (faith he) from the greatnefs of the things done by him, we should be moved to imagine that our Lord [Jefus Chrift] is Unoriginated, [and fo himself the original Caufe ;] what doth He, who hath Life in himfelf, fay of himself ? I live by the Father. And what doth he, who is the Power of God, say of himfelf ? The Son can do nothing of Himfelf. And what doth he, who is perfect Wisdom, say of Himself? I have received

a Commandment, what I fhall fay, and what I fhall fpeak. Leading us by all these things to the knowledge of the Father, and referring to him the wonderfulness of the things done ; that fo through the Son we may know the Father.
