2. Behold, He puts His trust in none
Of all the spirits round His throne;
Their natures, when compared with His,
Are neither holy, just, nor wise.

3. But how much meaner things are they
Who spring from dust, and dwell in clay !
Touched by the finger of Thy wrath,
We faint, and vanish like the moth.

4. From night to day, from day to night,
We die by thousands in Thy sight:
Buried in dust whole nations lie,
Like a forgotten vanity.

5. Almighty Power, to Thee we bow;
How frail are we! how glorious Thou!
No more the sons of earth shall dare
With an eternal God compare.

[blocks in formation]

And aid my tongue to bless His name,
Whose favors are divine.

2. Oh! bless the Lord, my soul!

Nor let His mercies lie
Forgotten in unthankfulness,
And without praises die.

3. 'Tis He forgives thy sins,

'Tis He relieves thy pain,
'Tis He who heals thy sicknesses,
And makes thee young again.

4. He crowns thy life with love,

When ransomed from the grave;
He, who redeemed my soul from hell,

Hath sovereign power to save.

5. He fills the poor with good;

He gives the sufferers rest;

The Lord hath judgments for the proud,
And justice for th' oppressed.

6. His wondrous works and ways

He made by Moses known;

But sent the world His truth and grace
By His beloved Son.

1390. C. M.

1. LONG as I live, I'll bless Thy name,
My King, my God of love;
My work and joy shall be the same,
In brighter worlds above.

2. Great is the Lord-His power unknown,
Oh let His praise be great;
I'll sing the honors of Thy throne,
Thy works of grace repeat.

3. Thy grace shall dwell upon my tongue,
And while my lips rejoice,
The men who hear my sacred song,
Shall join their cheerful voice.

4. Fathers to sons shall tell Thy name,
And children learn Thy ways;
Ages to come Thy truth proclaim,
And nations sound Thy praise.

5. The world is governed by Thy hand,
Thy saints are ruled by love;
And Thine eternal kingdom stands,
Though rocks and hills remove.

1391. C. M.

1. 'Tis by Thy strength the mountains stand, God of eternal power!

The sea grows calm at Thy command,
And tempests cease to roar.

2. Thy morning-light and evening-shade
Successive comforts bring;

Thy plenteous fruits make harvest glad,
Thy flowers adorn the spring.

3. Seasons and times, and moons and hours,
Heaven, earth, and air are Thine;
When clouds distill in fruitful showers,
The author is divine.

4. Those wandering cisterns in the sky,
Borne by the winds around,
With watery treasures well supply
The furrows of the ground.

5. The thirsty ridges drink their fill,
And ranks of corn appear;
Thy ways abound with blessings still,
Thy goodness crowns the year.

1392. C. M.

1. SWEET is the mem'ry of Thy grace,
My God! my heavenly King!
Let age to age Thy righteousness
In sounds of glory sing.

2. God reigns on high,-but ne'er confines His goodness to the skies;

Through the whole earth His bounty shines, And every want supplies.

3. With longing eyes, Thy creatures wait On Thee for daily food:

Thy liberal hand provides their meat,
And fills their mouth with good.

4. How kind are Thy compassions, Lord!
How slow Thine anger moves!
But soon He sends His pard'ning word
To cheer the souls He loves.

5. Creatures with all their endless race,
Thy power and praise proclaim;
But saints, who taste Thy richer grace,
Delight to bless Thy name.

1393. 7s.

1. PRAISE the Lord-His power confess; Praise Him in His holiness;

Praise Him as the theme inspires;
Praise Him as His fame requires.

2. Let the trumpet's lofty sound Spread its loudest notes around; Let the harp unite, in praise, With the sacred minstrel's lays.

3. Let the organ join to bless

God-the Lord of righteousness;
Tune your voice to spread the fame
Of the great Jehovah's name.

4. All who dwell beneath His light!
In His praise, your hearts unite;
While the stream of song is poured—
Praise and magnify the Lord.

1394. L. P. M.

1. LET all the earth their voices raise,
To sing the choicest psalm of praise;

To sing and bless Jehovah's name:
His glory let the heathen know;
His wonders to the nations show;

And all His saving works proclaim.

2. He framed the globe, He built the sky, He made the shining worlds on high,

And reigns complete in glory there;
His beams are majesty and light;
His beauties-how divinely bright!
His temple-how divinely fair!

3. Come the great day, the glorious hour,
When earth shall feel His saving power,
And barb'rous nations fear his name!
Then shall the race of man confess
The beauty of His holiness,

3. Our lips shall tell them to our sons,
And they again to theirs,
That generations yet unborn

May teach them to their heirs.

4. Thus shall they learn, in God alone
Their hope securely stands;
That they may ne'er forget His works,
But practice His commands.

1396. L. M.

1. LORD, in Thy great, Thy glorious name,
I place my hope, my only trust;
Save me from sorrow, guilt, and shame,
Thou ever gracious, ever just.

2. Thou art my rock-Thy name alone
The fortress where my hopes retreat:
Oh make Thy power and mercy known
To safety guide my wandering feet.

3. Blest be the Lord-forever blest,

Whose mercy bids my fear remove, Those sacred walls, which guard my rest Are His almighty power and love. 4. Ye humble souls, who seek his face, Let sacred courage fill your heart! Hope in the Lord-and trust His grace, And He will heavenly strength impart

1397. C. M.

1. I LOVE the Lord;-He heard my cries,
And pitied every groan;
Long as I live, when troubles rise,
I'll hasten to His throne.

2. I love the Lord;-He bowed His ear,
And chased my griefs away;
Oh! let my heart no more despair
While I have breath to pray.

3. My flesh declined, my spirits fell,
And I drew near the dead;
While inward pangs and fears of hell
Perplexed my wakeful head.

And, in His courts, His grace proclaim. 4. "My God," I cried, "Thy servant savo,

1395. C. M..

1. LET children hear the mighty deeds Which God performed of old; Which in our younger years we saw, And which our fathers told.

2. He bids us make His glories known,—
His works of power and grace;
And we'll convey His wonders down
Through every rising race.

Thou ever good and just!

Thy power can rescue from the grave-
Thy power is all my trust."

5. The Lord beheld me sore distressed,
He bade my pains remove;
Return, my soul! to God Thy rest,
For thou hast known His love.

6. My God hath saved my soul from death,
And dried my falling tears;
Now to His praise I'll spend my breath,
And my remaining years.

1398. L. M.

1. FROM deep distress and troubled thoughts, To Thee, my God! I raise my cries: If Thou severely mark our faults,

No flesh can stand before Thine eyes.

2. But Thou hast built Thy throne of grace, Free to dispense Thy pardons there; That sinners may approach Thy face, And hope and love, as well as fear.

3. As the benighted pilgrims wait,

And long and wish for breaking day, So waits my soul before Thy gate;— When will my God His face display?

4. My trust is fixed upon Thy word,

Nor shall I trust Thy word in vain;
Let mourning souls address the Lord,
And find relief from all their pain.

5. Great is His love, and large His grace,
Through the redemption of His Son;
He turns our feet from sinful ways,
And pardons what our hands have done.

1399. C. M.

1. GOD of my childhood and my youth! The guide of all my days,

I have declared Thy heavenly truth,
And told Thy wondrous ways.

2. Wilt thou forsake my hoary hairs,
And leave my fainting heart?
Who shall sustain my sinking years,
If God, my strength, depart?

3. Let me Thy power and truth proclaim To the surviving age,

And leave a savor of Thy name,
When I shall quit the stage.

4. The land of silence and of death

Attends my next remove;

Oh! may these poor remains of breath
Teach the wide world Thy love.

1400. C. M.

1. My God, how many are my fears!
How fast my foes increase!
Conspiring my eternal death,
They break my present peace.

2. The lying tempter would persuade
There's no relief in heaven;
And all my swelling sins appear
Too great to be forgiven.

3. I cried, and from His holy hill
He bowed a listening ear;
I called my Father and my God,
And He subdued my fear.

4. What though the hosts of death and hell,
All armed, against me stood;
Terrors no more shall shake my soul,-
My refuge is my God.

5. Salvation to the Lord belongs,
His arm alone can save;
Blessings attend Thy people here,
And reach beyond the grave.

1401. C. M.

1. O LORD, our Lord, how wondrous great
Is thine exalted name!
The glories of Thy heavenly state
Let men and babes proclaim.

2. When I behold Thy works on high,
The moon that rules the night,
And stars that well adorn the sky,
Those moving worlds of light :-

3. Lord, what is man, or all his race,
Who dwells so far below,

That Thou shouldst visit him with grace,
And love his nature so?

4. That Thine eternal Son should bear
To take a mortal form,
Made lower than His angels are,
To save a dying worm.

5. Jesus, our Lord, how wondrous great Is Thine exalted name!

The glories of Thy heavenly state,
Let the whole earth proclaim.

1402. H. M.

1. THY mercy, oh! our God,
To all Thy church display;
Proclaim Thy grace abroad,
And spread the gospel day
High on thy throne,
Our prayers attend;
And quickly send
Salvation down.

2. Jesus the Saviour's nigh
To those who fear His name
He comes!-His praise on high
Let all His church proclaim!
His footsteps still

On earth shall stand,

And all the land

His glory fill.

[blocks in formation]

And when the hand of death
Shall stop their impious breath,

Their souls shall seck for peace in vain.

3. Oh! how will sinners need An advocate to plead,

Accepted at Thine awful throne! How, in that solemn hour, Would faith's transcendent power Outweigh all things beneath the sun!

4. Yet save their souls, O Lord! Subdue them by Thy word,

Though all their powers oppose Thy reign, Now may Thy foes submit, And bow beneath Thy feet,

Nor let them read Thy wrath in vain.

1408. S. M.

1. CAN sinners hope for heaven, Who love this world so well; Or dream of future happiness, While in the road to hell?

2. Shall they hosannas sing,

With an unhallowed tongue; Shall psalms adorn the guilty hand Which does its neighbor wrong?

3. Can sin's deceitful way,

Conduct to Zion's hill;

Or those expect with God to reign,
Who disregard His will?

4. Thy grace, O God, alone,

Can a good hope afford!

The pardoned and renewed shall see,
The glory of the Lord.

1409. L. M.

1. WHY will ye waste on trifling cares
That life which God's compassion spares,
While, in the various range of thought,
The one thing needful is forgot?

2. Shall God invite you from above?
Shall Jesus urge His dying love!
Shall troubled conscience give you pain?
And all these pleas unite in vain?

8. Not so your eyes will always view
Those objects which you now pursue;
Not so will heaven and hell appear,
When death's decisive hour is near.

4. Almighty God, Thy grace impart,
Fix deep conviction on each heart:
Then we no more on trifling cares
Shall waste that life Thy mercy spares.

1410. C. M.

1. BLEST is the man who shuns the place
Where sinners love to meet;
Who fears to tread their wicked ways,
And hates the scoffer's seat.

2. But in the statutes of the Lord
Has placed his chief delight;
By day he reads or hears the word,
And meditates by night.

3. He, like a plant of generous kind
By living waters set,

Safe from the storms and blasting wind,
Enjoys a peaceful state.

4. Green as the leaf, and ever fair, Shall his profession shine; While fruits of holiness appear, Like clusters on the vine.

5. Not so the impious and unjust:
What vain designs they form!
Their hopes are blown away like dust,
Or chaff before the storm.

6. Sinners in judgment shall not stand
Among the sons of grace,

When Christ, the Judge, at His right hand,
Appoints His saints a place.

1411. 7s double.

1. SINNERS, turn, why will ye die?
God your Maker asks you why?
God, who did you being give,
Made you with Himself to live;
He, the fatal cause demands,
Asks the work of His own hands;
Why, ye thankless creatures, why
Will ye cross His love, and die?

2. Sinners, turn, why will ye die?
God your Saviour asks you why;
He who did your souls retrieve-
Died Himself that ye might live.
Will ye let Him die in vain?
Crucify your Lord again?
Why, ye ransomed sinners, why
Will ye slight his grace, and die?

3. Sinners, turn, why will ye die!
God the Spirit asks you why;
Now His influence from above,
Moves you to embrace His love:
Will ye not His grace receive?
Will ye still refuse to live?
Why, ye long-sought sinners, why
Will ye grieve your God, and die?
