1412. 7s.

1. COME, ye weary sinners, come, All who feel your heavy load: Jesus calls the wanderers home;

Hasten to your pardoning God: Come, ye guilty souls oppressed,

Answer to the Saviour's call: "Come, and I will give you rest; Come, and I will save you all."

2. Jesus, full of truth and love,

We Thy kindest call obey,
Faithful let Thy mercies prove,
Take our load of guilt away:
Weary of this war within,

Weary of this endless strife,
Weary of ourselves and sin,
Weary of a wretched life.

3. Burdened with a world of grief,
Burdened with our sinful load,
Burdened with this unbelief,
Burdened with the wrath of God,
Lo, we come to Thee for ease,
True and gracious as Thou art;
Now our weary souls release,

Write forgiveness on our heart.

1413. L. M.

1. No more, my God, I boast no more,
Of all the duties I have done;
I quit the hopes I held before,
To trust the merits of Thy Son.

2. Now, for the love I bear His name,
What was my gain, I count my loss:
My former pride I call my shame,
And nail my glory to His cross.

3. Yes, and I must and will esteem

All things but loss for Jesus' sake;
Oh, may my soul be found in Him,
And of His righteousness partake!

4. The best, obedience of my hands

Dares not appear before Thy throne; But faith can answer Thy demands,

By pleading what my Lord has done.

1414. L. M.

1. THOUGH I have grieved Thy Spirit, Lord!
His help and comfort still afford;
And let a wretch come near Thy throne,
To plead the merits of Thy Son.

2. A broken heart, my God! my King!
Is all the sacrifice I bring;
The God of grace will ne'er despise
A broken heart for sacrifice.

3. My soul lies humbled in the dust,
And owns Thy dreadful sentence just;
Look down, O Lord! with pitying eye,
And save the soul condemned to die.

4. Then will I teach the world Thy ways; Sinners shall learn Thy sovereign grace; I'll lead them to my Saviour's blood, And they shall praise a pard'ning God.

5. Oh! may Thy love inspire my tongue; Salvation shall be all my song;

And all my powers shall join to bless
The Lord, my strength and righteousness.

1415. C. M.

1. Now shall my solemn vows be paid
To that almighty Power,
Who heard the long requests I made,
In my distressful hour.

2. My lips and cheerful heart prepare
To make His mercies known;
Come, ye who fear my God, and hear
The wonders He has done.

3. When on my head huge sorrows fell, I sought His heavenly aid;

He saved my sinking soul from hell,
And death's eternal shade.

4. Had sin lain covered in my heart,

While prayer employed my tongue, The Lord had shown me no regard, Nor I His praises sung.

5. But God-His name be ever blessedHas set my spirit free;

Nor turned from Him my poor request,
Nor turned His heart from me.

1416. C. M.

1. I WAITED patient for the Lord,-
He bowed to hear my cry;
He saw me resting on His word,
And brought salvation nigh.

2. He raised me from a horrid pit,
Where, mourning, long I lay;
And from my bonds released my feet-
Deep bonds of miry clay.

3. Firm on a rock He made me stand,
And taught my cheerful tongue
To speak the wonders of His hand,
In praise thankful song.

4. I'll spread His works of grace abroad;
The saints with joy shall hear;
And sinners learn to make my God
Their only hope and fear.

1417. C. M.

1. In vain we lavish out our lives

To gather empty wind;

The choicest blessings earth can yield
Will starve a hungry mind.

2. Our God can every want supply,
And fill our hearts with peace:
He gives by covenant, and by oath,
The riches of His grace.

3. Come-and He'll cleanse our guilty souls, And wash away our stains

In that pure fountain which his Son
Poured from his dying veins.

4 His spirit in our hearts shall dwell,
And deep engrave His law;
And every motion of our souls

To swift obedience draw.

5. Thus will He pour salvation down,
And we shall render praise:
We, the dear people of His love,
And he, our God of grace.

1418. L. M.

1. BLEST be the Lord, who heard my prayer,
The Lord my shie d, my help my song,
Who saved my soul from sin and fear,
And tuned with praise my thankful tongue.

2. In the dark house of deep distress,
By foes beset, of death afraid,
My spirit trusted in His grace,

And sought, and found, His heavenly aid.

3. O blest Redeemer of mankind!

Thy shield, Thy saving strength, shall be, The shield, the strength of every mind, That loves Thy name and trusts in Thee.

4. Remember, Lord, Thy chosen seed; Israel defend from guilt and woe; Thy flock in richest pastures feed,

And guard their steps from every foe.

5. Zion exalt, her cause maintain,

With peace and joy her courts surround: In showers let endless blessings rain, And saints eternal praise resound.

1419. L. M.

1. WHO shall the Lord's elect condemn? "Tis God that justifies their souls, And mercy, like a mighty stream, O'er all their sins divinely rolls.

2. Who shall adjudge the saints to hell? "Tis Christ that suffered in their stead; And, their salvation to fulfill,

Behold Him rising from the dead!

3. He lives! He lives! and sits above,
Forever interceding there:

Who shall divide us from His love,
Or what should tempt us to despair?

4. Faith hath an overcoming power,

It triumphs in the dying hour;
He that hath loved us, bears us through,
And makes us more than conquerors too.

5. Not all that men on earth can do,
Nor powers on high, nor powers below,
Shall cause His mercy to remove,

Or wean our hearts from Christ our love

1420. 8s.

1. A DEBTOR to mercy alone,
Of covenant mercy I sing;

Nor fear, with Thy righteousness on,
My person and off rings to bring:
The terrors of law and of God

With me can have nothing to do;
My Saviour's obedience and blood

Hide all my transgressious from view.

2. The work which His goodness began,
The arm of His strength will complete;
His promise is Yea and Amen,

And never was forfeited yet;
Things future, nor things that are now,
Not all things below or above,
Can make Him His purpose forego,
Or sever my soul from His love.

3. My name from the palms of His hands
Eternity will not erase;
Impressed on His heart it remains,
In marks of indelible grace:
Yes I to the end shall endure,

As sure as the earnest is given;
More happy, but not more secure,
The glorified spirits in heaven.

1421. L. M.

1. How oft have Sin and Satan strove To rend my soul from thee, my God! But everlasting is Thy love,

And Jesus seals it with His blood

2. The oath and promise of the Lord
Join to confirm the wondro's grace;
Eternal power performs the word,
And fills all heaven with endless praise.

3. Amidst temptations, sharp and long,
My soul to this dear refuge flies;
Hope is my anchor, firm and strong,
While tempests biow, and billows rise.

4. The gospel bears my spirit up;

A faithful and unchanging God,
Lays the foundation for my hope,
In oaths, and promises, and blood.

1422. C. M.

1. I WAIT for Thy salvation, Lord,
With strong desires I wait;
My soul, invited by Thy word,
Stands watching at Thy gate.

2. Just as the guards that keep the night
Long for the morning skies,
Watch the first beams of breaking light,
And meet them with their eyes:-

3. So waits my soul to see Thy grace,
And, more intent than they,
Meets the first openings of Thy face,
And finds a brighter day.

4. Then in the Lord let Israel trust,
Let Israel seek His face;
The Lord is good as well as just,

And plenteous is His grace.

5. There's full redemption at His throne For sinners long enslaved;

The great Redeemer is His Son,
And Israel shall be saved.

[blocks in formation]

Bids sins of a crimson like dye
Be spotless as snow and as white:
And raises the sinner on high,
To dwell with the angels of light.

1424. C. M.

1. My soul lies cleaving to the dust;
Lord, give me lite divine;
From vain desires, and every lust,
Turn off these eyes of mine.

2. I need the influence of Thy grace
To speed me in Thy way,
Lest I should loiter in my race,
Or turn my feet astray.

3. Are not Thy mercies sovereign still,
And Thou a faithful God?
Wilt Thou not grant me warmer zeal
To run the heavenly road?

4. Does not my heart Thy precepts love,
And long to see Thy face?
And yet, how slow my spirits move
Without enlivening grace!

5. Then shall I love Thy gospel more,
And ne'er forget Thy word,
When I have felt it- quickening power
To draw me near the Lord.

1425. 8s.

1. ENCOMPASSED with clouds of distress,
Just ready all hope to resign,
I pant for the light of Thy face,

And fear it will never be mine;
Di-heartened with waiting so long,
I sink at Thy feet with my load;
All plaintive I pour out my song,
And stretch forth my hands unto God.

2. If sometimes I strive, as I

mourn,

My hold on Thy promise to keep,
The billows more fiercely return,
And plunge me again in the deep:
While harassed and cast from thy sight,
The tempter suggests with a roar,
"The Lord has forsaken thee quite:
Thy God will be gracious no more."

3. Shine, Lord, and my terrors shall cease;
The blood of atonement apply;
And lead me to Jesus for peace,
The rock that is higher than I.
Almighty to rescue Thou art

Thy grace is my shield and my tower
Come, succor and gladden my heart,

Let this be the day of Thy power.

1426. L. M.

1. LORD, I can suffer Thy rebukes,

When Thou with kindness dost chastise;
But Thy fierce wrath I cannot bear,
Oh, let it not against me rise!

2. See how in sighs I pass my days,

And waste in groans the weary night; My bed is watered with my tears,

My grief consumes and dims my sight.

3. Look how the powers of nature mourn! How long, Almighty God, how long? When shall Thine hour of grace return,When shall I make Thy grace my song?

4. I feel my flesh so near the grave,

My thoughts are tempted to despair: The grave can never praise the Lord, For all is dust and silence there.

5. Depart, ye tempters, from my soul,

And all despairing thoughts, depart; My God, who hears my humble moan, Will ease my flesh and cheer my heart.

1427. L. M.

1. How long, O Lord, shall I complain,
Like one that seeks his God in vain?
Wilt Thou Thy face forever hide?
Shall I still pray and be denied?

2. Hear, Lord, and grant me quick relief,
Before my death conclude my grief;
If Thou withhold Thy heavenly light,
I sleep in everlasting night.

3. How will the powers of darkness boast
If but one praying soul be lost!
But I have trusted in Thy grace,
And shall again behold thy face.

4. Whate'er my fears or foes suggest, Thou art my hope, my joy, my rest; My heart shall feel Thy love, and raise My cheerful voice to songs of praise.

1428. C. M.

1. My drowsy powers, why sleep ye so!
Awake, my sluggish soul;
Nothing has half thy work to do,
Yet nothing's half so dull.

2. The little ants for one poor grain,
Labor, and tug, and strive;

Yet we, who have a heaven to obtain,
How negligent we live!

3. We, for whose sake all nature stands,
And stars their courses move-
We, for whose guard the angel-bands
Come flying from above-

4. We for whom God the Son came down
And labored for our good-
How careless to secure that crown
He purchased with His blood!
5. Lord, shall we lie so sluggish still,
And never act our parts?
Come, Holy Spirit, come and fill,

And wake and warm our hearts.

6. Then shall our active spirits move;
Upward our souls shall rise:
With hands of faith and wings of love,
We'll fly and take the prize.

1429. C. M.

1. How helpless guilty nature lies,
Unconscious of its load!

The heart unchanged, can never rise
To happiness and God.

2. Can aught beneath a power divine
The stubborn will subdue?
"Tis Thine, Almighty Saviour, Thine
To form the heart anew.

8. Tis Thine the passions to recall,
And upward bid them rise,
And make the scales of error fall
From reason's darkened eyes.

4. To chase the shades of death away,
And bid the sinner live;

A beam of heaven, a vital ray,
"Tis Thine alone to give.

5. Oh, change these wretched hearts of ours, And give them life divine;

Then shall our passions and our powers,
Almighty Lord, be Thine.

1430. S. M.

1. MINE eyes and my desire

Are ever to the Lord;
I love to plead His promises,
And rest upon His word.

2. Turn, turn Thee to my soul;
Bring Thy salvation near;
When will Thy hand release my feet
Out of the deadly snare?

3. When shall the sovereign grace

Of my forgiving God,

Restore me from those dangerous ways
My wandering feet have trod!

4. With every morning light,

My grief anew begins;
Look on my anguish and my pain,
And pardon all my sins.

5. O keep my soul from death,

Nor put my hope to shame; For I have placed my only trust In my Redeemer's name.

6. With humble faith I wait

To see Thy face again;
Of Israel it shall ne'er be said,
He sought the Lord in vain.

1431. L. M.

1. GREAT God, how oft did Israel prove
By turns Thine anger and Thy love!
There in a glass our hearts may see
How fickle and how false are we.

2. How soon the faithless Jews forgot
The dreadful wonders God had wrought!
Then they provoke Him to His face,
Nor fear His power nor trust His grace.

8. Oft when they saw their brethren slain,
They mourned and sought the Lord again;
Called Him the Rock of their abode,
Their high Redeemer and their God.

4. Their prayers and vows before Him rise
As flattering words or solemn lies;
While their rebellious tempers prove
Faise to His covenant and His love.

5. Yet did His sovereign grace forgive
The men who ne'er deserved to live;
His anger oft away He turned,
Or else with gentle flame it burned.

6. He saw their flesh was weak and frail,
He saw temptation still prevail;
The God of Abra'm loved them still,
Aud led them to His holy hill.

1432. L. M.

1. BLEST is the man whose heart doth move,
And melt with pity to the poor;
Whose soul, by sympathizing love,
Feels what his fellow-saints endure.

2. His heart contrives for their relief
More good than his own hands can do;
He, in the time of general grief,

Shall find the Lord has pity too.

3. His soul shall live secure on earth,

With secret blessings on his head,
When drought, and pestilence, and dearth,
Around him multiply their dead.
