THE BIRTH OF VENUS.

This was the first performance exhibited by Barry after his return from Italy, in 1772 : it is taken from the Theogony of Hesiod, and from the accounts which have descended to us of a painting of the same subject, by one of the most celebrated masters of antiquity, Apelles.

—A nymph arose divinely fair,

Whom to Cythera first the surges bear;

Hence is she borne, safe o'er the deeps profound,

To Cyprus, water'd by the waves around:
And Aphrodite from the foam, her name,
Among the race of gods and men the same;

And Cytherea from Cythera came,

Whence, beauteous crown'd, she safely cross'd the sea.
And call'd, O Cyprus; Cypria from thee.

The action of the goddess, as she wreathes her ample tresses, is easy, simple, and graceful, all nature feels her genial presence; the flowers spring up under her feet, and Cupid smiles in anticipated triumph.

This charming picture at once established the fame of its painter; the composition is characterized by the purest taste, the drawing is vigorous and correct, the colouring is succesful, and the light and shade appropriate but the public, little familiar at that time with the higher departments of art, regarded the artist and his work with a mortifying indifference.

Barry published a print of this subject himself, and it has since been engraved at Paris by Niquet; more recently it has been copied in lithography without aknowledgment.

CE tableau fut le premier que Barry exposa après sont retour d'Italie, en 1772. Le sujet est pris dans la Théogonie d'Hésiode l'artiste s'est aussi servi des descriptions qui sont restées d'un semblable ouvrage peint par Apelles, un des plus célèbres peintres de l'antiquité.

La pose est aisée, simple et gracieuse : la déesse tresse sa longue chevelure; les fleurs naissent sous ses pas : tout est animé de sa présence vivifiante, et l'Amour sourit d'avance des triomphes qu'il prévoit.

Ce charmant tableau a établi la réputation du peintre : la composition marque le goût le plus pur, le dessin en est vigoureux et correct, la couleur est d'un bon effet, et le clairobscur convenable. Cependant le public, à cette époque peu connaisseur en compositions d'un style élevé, accueillit l'artiste et son ouvrage avec une froideur mortifiante.

Barry donna lui-même une gravure de ce tableau, et, depuis, il a été gravé à Paris par Niquet: dernièrement on l'a copié en lithographie, mais sans indiquer le peintre.
