LAWRENCE.

HIS MAJESTY GEORGE IV.

George IV, King of Great Britain, Ireland and Hanover, the eldest son of George III, and his consort Charlotte, a princess of the house of Mecklenburg Strelitz, was born at St James's palace, August 12, 1762; and, as heir apparent of the crown, immediately received the title of Prince of Wales.

On the 8 of April 1795, he was married to his cousin german Caroline, daughter of the Duke of Brunswick: the only issue of this marriage was a daughter, the late Princess Charlotte, born January 7, 1796, married May 2, 1816, to the Prince Leopold, of Saxe-Cobourg; and died November 6, 1817 after the birth of a still-born child.

Early in 1811, the mental affliction of George III having rendered it necessary to provide for the due administration of the government, Parliament invested the Prince of Wales with the power and dignity of Regent; and, on the death of his father, he ascended the British throne January 29, 1820, and was crowned July 19, 1821. George IV departed this life June 26, 1830 after reigning more than ten years in undisturbed tranquillity.

This picture was painted for the Marchioness of Conyngham, and is valuable for its fidelity of resemblance, its unpretending style and absence of affectation, its breadth of tone, and light and shade, although the latter is somewhat monotonous. A splendid engraving from this picture, by W. Finden, has been published by the house of Moon, Boys, and Graves, of London.

LAWRENCE.

GEORGE IV.
