the addition of many new ones, collected from a great variety of sources. In compiling this Hymn-book my aim has been to make a collection of devotional poetry, suitable at once for public worship and private reading. The edition as it now appears is sent forth in the earnest hope it may become a household friend in at least a few homes. I have sought to exclude from its pages everything of a narrow and sectarian character, and aimed to make it devotional in spirit and catholic in sentiment.

My High Garrett and Halstead friends will, I feel sure, sympathize with me in this aim. For their use mainly the Hymn-book has been compiled, and if it meet with their approval, I shall consider myself amply repaid for any little amount of time and trouble its compilation and publication have required.

GOD IS A SPIRIT:

AND THEY THAT WORSHIP HIM MUST WORSHIP HIM

IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH.

1 Sweet is the work, my God, my King,

To praise thy name, give thanks, and sing;
To show thy love by morning light,
And talk of all thy truth at night.

2 Sweet is the day of sacred rest;

No mortal cares shall seize my breast;
Oh may my heart in tune be found,
Like David's harp of solemn sound.

3 My heart shall triumph in the Lord,

And bless his works, and bless his word; Thy works of grace how bright they shine! How deep thy counsels, how divine !

1 In thy courts, O Lord, assembling,

We thy people now draw near :
Teach us to rejoice with trembling;
Speak, and let thy servants hear;

Hear with meekness ;-
Hear thy word with godly fear.

2 While our days on earth are lengthened,

May we give them, Lord, to thee! Cheered by hope, and daily strengthened, May we run, nor weary

be !
Till thy glory
Without cloud in heaven we see.

1 Thou art the first, and thou the last;

Time centres all in thee,
The almighty God who was, and is,

And evermore shall be.

2 To thee let every tongue be praise,

And every heart be love,
All grateful honours paid on earth,

And nobler songs above.
