520 PRINCIPALS; MASTERS OF PEMBROKE. Professor of Civil Law. William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, then Chancellor, writing from Whitehall, Jan. 27, stated that he had promised to confer the first principalships that fell vacant on the two professors of Law and Physic. He therefore ordered the election of Dr. Budden in place of Mr. Summester, deceased. The scholars accordingly elected him. Election, since Leicester's time, was no longer free. On June 14, 1620, in consequence of Budden's death, the University received an intimation from the Chancellor, writing on June 12, that he fulfilled the second part of his promise by nominating in his room the Regius Professor of Physic, Doctor Clayton (Reg. Univ., ed. Clark, O. H. S., vol. ii. part i. pp. 290, 291). CLAYTON, THOMAS. 1620. Last Principal of Broadgates Hall and first Master of Pembroke College. Ob. 1647. MASTERS OF PEMBROKE COLLEGE. 1624.
