HOLLOWAY'S PILLS.-The diseases common

to our rigorous climate which endanger the constitution will always exist, though many may be mitigated and their effects removed by timely aid appropriately applied. Holloway's Pills are acknowledged far and wide to be the most effective purifier of the blood, the most certain regulator of disordered organs, and the safest and surest sperient that can be prescribed. This medicine is applicable to all alike, young or old. robust or delicate; it increases the apetite and regulates the bowels. After the aisorder is subdued occasional doses of these Pills will prevent any relapse, and moreover secure, promote, and intensify the good results which flow from perfect purity and regularity.

Sunderland Library.

MESSRS. PUTTICK & SIMPSON have received
instructions to prepare for SALE by AUCTION the very large CATALOGUE

and most important COLLECTION of BOOKS known as the
SUNDERLAND or BLENHEIM LIBRARY. The Library con-
tains about 20,000 Volumes, the larger proportion of which consists
of the Works of the ANCIENT GREEK and ROMAN CLASSIC
WRITERS. These are found either in the First or very Early
Editions, issued from the Presses of the Inventors and Introducers of
the Typographic Art, or in Special Editions produced by celebrated
Printers, which are now treasured either as chefs d'ouvre of the
printing press, or for some peculiar literary interest connected with
the text. Many of them are printed upon vellum, and nearly all are
of a very high degree of rarity. Another principal and most im-
portant feature in the Library is the large number of EARLY
PRINTED and RARE BIBLES. Thus we have the Polyglotts of
Card. Ximenes, Plantin, Brian Walton, Le Jay, Wolder, and others-
Rare Editions of the Hebrew Scriptures and the Septuagint Version-
nearly a Hundred Editions of the Vulgate, including Fust and
Scheffer's of 1462, printed on vellum-the Rare Edition of J. P. de
Ferratis, Placentia, 1475, complete-Editions by B. Richel, Ant.
Coberger, Nic. Jenson, Renner de Heilbrun. Georg. de Rivabenis,
Nio. Kessler, and other printers of the fifteenth century; also many
Editions from the later presses of I. Colin, R. and H. Stephans,
C. Plantin, C. Froschover, Seb. Gryphius, and other less known
printers. The Editions in English comprise those of 1541 and 1549,
1595 (Q Elizabeth's Copy), 1619 (James I's Copy, on large paper),
1685, large paper, with the Visschei plates-the Vinegar Bible, printed
on vellum-Macklin's and Kaskerville's and other splendid Editions
-also the Rare French Editions of 1520, 1531, 1535, 1541, and many
others up to 1715-in Italian, 1481, 1502, 1545, &c. -and a few in Spanish,
Slavonic, Grison, and other languages. Most important, too, are the
numerous and Rare Editions of the Early Italian Writers, and
makers and consolidators of the Italian language. These are repre-
sented by Dante, Boccaccio, and Petrarch, and later by Ariosto, Berni,
Machiavelli. Aretino, Bojardo, Tasso, Bemoo, &c. Of Dante there
are about a Hundred Editions, dating from 1472 to 1583, and including
a fine Manuscript of the "Inferno," written in the first half of the
fifteenth century. Of Boccaccio also there are numerous Editions,
including the famous first one of Valdarfer. 1471-that of Adam de
Michaelibus, 1472-" De la Ruine des Nobles Homnes," from the press
of Colard Mansion, of Bruges-others from the presses of Verard, and
other early French printers, &c. Of Petrarch the number of Editions
is about the same, and includes many very rare. There are numerous
Rare Works relating to America, including De By's Voyages-the
Relations of Vespucius and Cortes-several Rare Tracts relating to
Virginia, by Bullock and others-Capt. Smith's Virginia-Hakluytus
Posthumous-Purchas his Pi'grimages-and many others. There will
also be found many Rare Spanish and Portuguese Chronicles-a few
important English Antiquarian and Historical Works by Dugdale,
Clarendon, Burnet, Hearne, &c.-County Histories by Atkyns, Harris,
Thoresby, Wood, Skelton, Somner, Thoroton, Plot, Leigh Ware, Grose,
Hutchinson, King, Prince, and others, mostly on large paper-Chro-
nicles of Caxton, Hollinshed, Hall, Grafton, &c.- Early Editions of
Chaucer, &c-many Collections of Councils-Lives of Saints-Anti-
quities-a vast number of Tracts relating to England and France in
the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries-Old Romances-a large
number of Books on Canon and Civil Law, Ecclesiastical History,
Statutes and Ordinances, &c.

It is proposed to divide this Sale into three portions of Ten Days each, and the First Portion will commence on the FIRST of DECEMBER in the present year.

ETON COLLEGE LIBRARY.

(Continued from p. 23.)

For the following account of the most important of our impressions of Shakespeare I am indebted to the kindness of my friend and colleague Mr. Shuckburgh.

The Shakespearian collection contained in the Storer books is of considerable interest and value. There are copies, in admirable preservation, of the first two folios, the first having been interleaved with many excellent engravings. The third folio is the second issue of 1664 (described in the Cambridge Shakespeare, vol. i. p. xxvii), containing "seven plays never before printed in Folio, viz.: Pericles, Prince of Tyre: The London Prodigall: The History of Thomas Lord Cromwell: Sir John Oldcastle Lord Cobham: The Puritan Widow: A Yorkshire Tragedy: The Tragedy of Locrine," and is described as "London, printed for P. C., 1664." There are also five quarto volumes containing copies of varying excellence. Of these it is perhaps worth while to append a detailed description. Vol. I.-1. "The Troublesome Raigne of King John." The title-page of the first part is lost, but the second part has the following:"The | Second Part of the | Troublesome Raigne of

and enlarged. | Written by William Shakespeare, Gent. | Printed at London for T. P." There is no date, but Capell has dated it 1619 by comparing the signature of the pages with that of an edition of Pericles (Cambridge Shakespeare, vol. v. p. ix). It is cited as Quarto 3.

Vol. II.-1. "A Midsommer Nights dreame." It is "printed by James Roberts, 1600." This is a reprint of a quarto printed in the same year by Thomas Fisher. It is cited as Quarto 2 (Cambridge Shakespeare, vol. ii. pp. viii-ix).

2. "Loves Labour Lost." Printed by W. S. for John Smethwicke, 1631. This is the second quarto, and is reprinted from Folio 1 (Cambridge Shakespeare, vol. ii. p. viii).

3. "The Excellent | History of the Mer- I chant of Venice | with the Extreme Cruelty of Shylocke | the Jew towards the saide Merchant, in cutting a just Pound of his Flesh. And the obtaining of Portia by the choyse of three Caskets. Written by W. Shakespeare. | Printed by F. Roberts, 1600." This is the first quarto (Cambridge Shakespeare, vol. ii. p. ix). The heading of the first page has "The Comical History of the Merchant of Venice."

4. The same, with the alteration of chests for caskets. "Printed by M. P. for Laurence Hayes, and are sold at his shop on Fleet Bridge, 1637." This is Quarto 3. "London.

Vol. III.-1. The same as the last. Printed for William Leake, and are to be solde at his shop at the signe of the Crown in Fleet Street, between the two Temple Gates. 1652." This is the fourth quarto (Cambridge Shakespeare, vol. ii. p. xi).
