80.

Thy word the choicest rules imparts, To keep the conscience clean.

The Bible for the Young. PSALM CXIX.

83.

The Bible the Light of the World.

1. A GLORY gilds the sacred page,
Majestic, like the sun :

It gives a light to every age;
It gives, but borrows none.

2. The hand that gave it still supplies
The gracious light and heat;
Its truths upon the nations rise;
They rise, but never set.

3. Let everlasting thanks be thine
For snch a bright display,

As makes a world of darkness shine With beams of heavenly day. 4. My soul rejoices to pursue The steps of him I love, Till glory breaks upon my view In brighter worlds above!

A

Majesty and Omniscience of God.

Kingdoms and thrones to God be-long; Crown him, ye na- tions, in your song:

His won-drous name and pow'r re-hearse; His honors shall enrich your verse.

[blocks in formation]

1. KINGDOMS and thrones to God belong;
Crown him, ye nations, in your song:
His wondrous name and pow'r rehearse;
His honors shall enrich your verse.
2. He rides and thunders thro' the sky;
His name, Jehovah, sounds on high:
Praise him aloud, ye sons of grace;
Ye saints, rejoice before his face.

3. God is our shield, our joy, our rest;
God is our King, proclaim him blest :
When terrors rise, when nations faint,
He is the strength of every saint.
85.

The All-seeing God. PSALM CXXXix.

1. LORD, thou hast searched and seen me through;

Thine eye commands with piercing view,
My rising and my resting hours,
My heart and flesh with all their pow'rs.

2. My thoughts, before they are my own,
Are to my God distinctly known;
He knows the words I mean to speak,
Ere from my opening lips they break.
3 Within thy circling pow'r I stand;
On every side I find thy hand:
Awake, asleep, at nome, abroad,
I am surrounded still with God.

4. Amazing knowledge, vast and great!
What large extent! what lofty height!
My soul, with all the powers I boast,
Is in the boundless prospect lost.

5. O, may these thoughts possess my breast,
Where'er I rove, where'er I rest!
Nor let my weaker, passions dare
Consent to sin. for God is there.

86.

"Be still, and know that I am God."

1.WAIT, O my soul, thy Maker's will! Tumultuous passions, all be still; Nor let a murm'ring thought arise: His ways are just, his counsels wise. 2. He in the thickest darkness dwells, Performs his work, the cause conceals; And, tho' his footsteps are unknown, Judgment and truth support his throne 3. In heaven, and earth, and air, and seas, He executes his firm decrees;

And by his saints it stands confessed,
That what he does is ever best.

4. Wait, then, my soul, submissive wait,
With reverence bow before his seat
And, 'mid the terrors of his rod,
Trust in a wise and gracious God.

PSALM XXXiv.

87. "I sought the Lord, and He Heard Me.” 1. LORD, I will bless thee all my days, Thy praise shall dwell upon my tongue :

My soul shall glory in thy grace,

While saints rejoice to hear the song. 2. Come, magnify the Lord with me; Come, let us all exalt his name: I sought th' eternal God, and he Has not exposed my hope to shame. 3. I told him all my secret grief,

My secret groaning reached his ears; He gave my inward pains relief, And calmed the tumult of my fears. 4. His holy angels pitch their tents

Around the men who serve the Lord; O, fear and love him, all ye saints! Taste of his grace and trust his word

Incomprehensibleness and Omnipresence.

Lord, how mys-te-rious are thy ways! How blind are we! how mean our praise!

Thy steps, can mor - tal eyes explore? 'Tis ours to won-der and a- - dore.

1. LORD, how mysterious are thy ways!
How blind are we! how mean our praise!
Thy steps, can mortal eyes explore?
"Tis ours to wonder and adore.

2 Great God! I would not ask to sec
What in my coming life shall be;
Enough for me, if love divine
At length thro' every cloud shall shine.

3. Are darkness and distress my share?
Then let me trust thy guardian care;
If light and bliss attend my days,
Then let my future hours be praise.

4. Yet this my soul desires to know,
Be this my only wish below,
That Christ be mine; this great request
Grant, bounteous God, and I am blest!

1. LORD, my weak tho't in vain would climb 3.
To search the starry vault profound:
In vain would wing her flight sublime,

To find creation's outmost bound.

2. But weaker yet that thought must prove 4. Lord of all life, below, above,

To search thy great eternal plan,— Thy sovereign counsels, born of love Long ages ere the world began.

3. When my dim reason would demand Why that, or this, thou dost ordain, By some vast deep I seem to stand, Whose secrets I must ask in vain.

[love,

Whose light is truth, whose warmth is
Before thy ever-blazing throne
We ask no luster of our own.

5. Grant us thy truth to make us free,
And kindling hearts that burn for thee,
Till all thy living altars claim
One holy light, one heavenly flame!

wonder, love, and praise!

94.

Remembrance of Divine Mercies.

2. UNNUMBERED comforts on my soul
Thy tender care bestowed,
Before my infant heart conceived

From whence those comforts flowed.

3. When, in the slippery paths of youth, With heedless step I ran,

They know thou art not slow to hear,
Nor impotent to save.

4. The storm is laid, the winds retire,
Obedient to thy will;

The sea, that roars at thy command,
At thy command is still.

Thine arm, unseen, conveyed me safe, 5. In midst of dangers, fears, and deaths,

And led me up to man.

4. Ten thousand, thousand precious gifts
My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart,
That tastes those gifts with joy.
5. Through every period of my life

Thy goodness I'll pursue;
And, after death, in distant worlds,
The glorious theme renew.

6. Through all eternity to thee
A joyful song I'll raise;
But, oh! eternity's too short
To utter all thy praise.

95.

"How are thy servants blest, O Lord!"

1. How are thy servants blest, O Lord!
How sure is their defense!
Eternal wisdom is their guide,
Their help, omnipotence.

2. In foreign realms, and lands remote,
Supported by thy care,

Thy goodness I'll adore;
I'll praise thee for thy mercies past,
And humbly hope for more.

6. My life, while thou preserv'st that life,
Thy sacrifice shall be;

And death, when death shall be my lot,
Shall join my soul to thee.

96.

"Thrice Holy Lord."

1. HOLY and reverend is the name
Of our eternal King;

"Thrice holy Lord!" the angels cry;
"Thrice holy!" let us sing.

2. The deepest reverence of the mind,
Pay, O my soul! to God;

Lift, with thy hands, a holy heart,
To his sublime abode.

3. With sacred awe pronounce his name,

Whom words nor thoughts can reach ; A broken heart shall please him more Than noblest forms of speech.

Thro' burning climes they pass unhurt, 4. Thou holy God! preserve my soul

And breathe in tainted air.

8. When by the dreadful tempest borne High on the broken wave,

From all pollution free;

The pure in heart are thy delight,
And they thy face shall see.
