CHAP. of Mr. Speght therefore, when duly examined, affords not the slightest foundation to the idea of a second pension granted to Chaucer, in the year 1371.

There is however one thing remarkable in the record produced by Mr. Speght, and that is the addition by which Chaucer is designated, Valettus Hospitü. This term can scarcely be construed as meaning less, than that the poet actually possessed an appointment of some kind, not yet traced in the records, in the royal houshold,
