the principal charters granted to the com-
pany were, in 1661, for the right of mak
ing peace and war; and of exercising
civil and criminal jurisdiction, 1773, by
which the constitution of the company
was fixed mainly as at present. The
various renewals were in 1657, for seven
years; in 1730, when their exclusive
privileges were extended to 1769; in
1783, when extended to 1785; in 1781,
when continued to 1794; in 1793, when
continued for 20 years; in 1813, con-
tinued for the same period, when the
trade to India was thrown open to
the public, under certain regulations;
but that to China, and the trade in tea
generally, were reserved to the com-
pany. But, by the charter of 1833, the
company is deprived of its remaining
commercial privileges; but it is left
in the possession of the government of
the British territories in India till 1854.
In 1772, the affairs of the company were
in so great confusion that they were
obliged to obtain 600,0007. from the
bank, and to apply to parliament for
assistance, which they obtained in 1773,
by the loan of 1,400,000l. In 1668, the
island of Bombay was granted to the
company in free and common socage, as
of the manner of East Greenwich, at an
annual rent of 101.
