Laurustinus not acting as if an alderman's gown were a fool's motley, as to find one so obtuse of perception possessing the average of mortal humanities. Almanacks, whether enclosed in gemmed souvenirs, or enveloping two ounces of "four shilling black," for the curious in

Bohea, contain the moral that appeals to all. In short, they are very serious affairs-milestones of the tomb, that mark the distance accomplished, but leave the traveller in suspense whether the end of his journey be near or afar off. Still the information they convey is neces

sary, and so is the result we desire from a pill. The considerate apothecary gilds his bolus; the proprietors of the "Comic Almanack," in like manner, furnish their memento mori in a palatable form. Nothing can exceed the fun of this little annual for the present year, except the extreme care that has been taken to prevent its assuming any offensive feature. The twelve plates by George Cruikshank present the novelty of double subjects in contrast with each other. These are replete with rich and racy humour. The "Before Dinner and After" cleverly depicting the stiffness of the drawing-room, in juxta-position with the jocularity of the after dinner party, is one of the best. The identity of the personages, in both scenes, is admirably preserved. There are abundance of comic wood-cuts, forming headpieces and borders to the pages. The preceding specimen will give some idea of the style of the minor embellishments and literature. There is a funny story running through the months-the adventures of Tom Gad; he is here losing his money at Ascot. The margin gives a succession of pictorial puns on well-known sporting terms. We have selected this, as being most appropriate to our own work; but we recommend the reader not to content himself with the knowledge of Roman architecture that may be acquired by the contemplation of one of its bricks.

FINE ARTS.

FAVOURITES: the property of Benjamin Boyd, Esq. Portraits of Young Camel, the Prince of Wales, Merry Pebbles, Cerberus, Hambledon, and Almack. Painted by S. E. Jones; on stone by J. Bouvier. T. Mc Lean, Haymarket.

THOUGH we had not seen, for some years, any work, of the equestrian order, from the pencil of Mr. Jones, we were too well acquainted with the high character of that gentlemen's talents not to be prepared for the admirable work to which this notice refers. Considered as a collection of spirited portraits, exquisitely grouped and finished—or as a rural scene, with its best accompaniments-we have rarely met anything so truly and so tastefully executed.

MAILS. "Changing Horses" and "All Right." Painted by C. C. Henderson; engraved by J. Harris. London: Messrs. Fores, Piccadilly.

THESE are two very clever illustrations of that which-woe is us! will soon be but matter of history. Mr. Henderson is much esteemed for his style in this department of his art, and his coaching subjects have already embellished this work. Of this pair, "All Right" is most to our taste, and forms a very animated tableau. All is in the best keeping, from the swell on the near side of the box, with his glass tucked under his eyelid, and his lighted cigar-to the dragsman who "catches hold on 'em," as it becomes such a team to be handled. Grateful are our memories of the road, and it well pleaseth us that such reminiscences as these should appear, lest, ere long-"auld acquaintance be forgot."
