In this School no Prizes are awarded, but since the year 1849 Special Certificates have been granted to Students who have distinguished themselves at their final Examination. A list of such Students will be found in page 146.

Several Exhibitions have, from time to time, been founded for the benefit of Students entering the University from different public and private schools. These Exhibitions are not, properly speaking, University Prizes, as they are not open to general competition, and therefore they do not come under any of the foregoing heads. For convenience of reference, however, a list of such Exhibitions, and of the rules relating to them, is subjoined.

1. Erasmus Smith's Exhibitions.

2. Royal Scholarships.

3. Exhibitions founded by the Dublin Academic Association.
4. Foyle College Exhibitions.

NON-FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS.

It was resolved by the Board, in Michaelmas Term, 1854, that additional Scholarships, to be called "Non-Foundation Scholarships," shall be created: and in Trinity Term, 1856, it was resolved that the successful Candidates should be called "Non-Foundation Scholars, and Erasmus Smith's Exhibitioners.”

These Scholarships are open to Students of all religious denominations, without distinction.

The Examination for these Scholarships is held at the same time and in the same subjects as that for the Chartered Scholarships; they are tenable for the same time, and with the same emoluments, as the Chartered Scholarships.

The following regulations are adopted for the election of "Scholars of the House" and "Non-foundation Scholars and Erasmus Smith's Exhibitioners :"

1. That a number of the best answerers in Science and in Classics be selected, equal to the total number of vacancies to be filled in each department, due regard being had to all other qualifications, except religious profession.

2. If the number of Dissenters thus selected be the same as the number of vacancies in the Non-foundation Scholarships, then all the Dissenters shall be elected "Non-foundation Scholars," and the others "Scholars of the House."

3. If the number of Dissenters be less than the number of vacancies in the Non-foundation Scholarships, the number of the Non-foundation Scholars shall be completed from the lowest answerers in the list of the selected Candidates, in such manner that the total number of these Scholarships shall be divided, as equally as may be, between Classics and Science.

4. If the number of Dissenters be greater than the number of vacancies in the Non-foundation Scholarships, and if they are all in the same department, the best answerers shall be elected "Non-foundation Scholars," and the total number of " Scholars of the House" completed from the best answerers in the same department among the unselected Candidates who are members of the Church. But if the selected Dissenters are not all in the same department, the marks of the lowest answerer among those in each department shall be compared, respectively, with the marks of the best answerer among the unselected members of the Church in the same department; and whichever Dissenter shall be found to have the smallest superiority of marks shall be excluded, and the Churchman elected in his stead, and so on till the total number of Dissenters selected is reduced to that of the vacancies in the Non-foundation scholarships.

5. The order of seniority of the Scholars, when elected, shall be determined by the same rule as the order of seniority of the Mode

rators at the Degree Examination, giving, however, in this case, the priority to Classics.

6. The number of "Non-foundation Scholars and Erasmus Smith's Exhibitioners" to be elected in 1857, is four.

PREMIUMS AT THE EXAMINATIONS FOR FELLOWSHIPS.

THE Provost and Senior Fellows, at every Fellowship Examination, grant premiums to such Candidates as appear to them to deserve encouragement, and in such proportions as they consider merited by the answering.

In the year 1798, Madden's Prizes were first granted according to the conditions specified in the codicil to the will of Samuel Molyneux Madden, Esq., dated August 7th, 1782, an extract from which will be found in the University Calendar for 1834.

The following is a list of all who have received Premiums for distinguished answering at Fellowship Examinations since the year 1819. Those whose names are marked thus (†) have afterwards become Fellows, and the first in each year obtained Madden's Premium.
