This book has been prepared for the express purpose of giving the necessary information respecting Mythology, free from those details which have generally rendered the subject objectionable. THE JUVENILE HISTORICAL LIBRARY.

BY MISS JULIA CORNER,

Author of "Questions on the History of Europe," ," "Sequel to Mangnall's Historical Questions," &c.

THE object of this publication is to furnish Young People, progressively, and at a trifling expense, with a COMPLETE SERIES OF HISTORIES, written with a view to entertain as well as to instruct, and to render them familiar with the people and customs of every country, from the earliest period to the present time, without the trouble and fatigue with which the acquirement of such knowledge is generally accompanied.

There are few Historical works exactly adapted for the perusal of Youth: such as have been written with that view are confined chiefly to France and England, or are merely collections of anecdotes; but the HISTORICAL LIBRARY Will contain a clear and concise History of every civilized Nation in the World, commencing with those of Europe,-not merely a political History, but also an accurate account of the progress of civilization, the manners and customs peculiar to each people, the arts, manufactures, and commerce of the various countries, at different periods, with every other particular calculated to interest, improve, and delight the youthful mind.

In the execution of this arduous undertaking, two material points will be observed: the one, not to put forth, as fact, any statement that is not well authenticated; the other, to avoid all obscure words and phrases, by which the interest of a book, to young readers, is so often destroyed.

THE JUVENILE HISTORICAL LIBRARY is, as its title implies, designed expressly for Youth; nevertheless, it is presumed, it will not be found devoid of interest to those of a more advanced age, who have not time to bestow on more voluminous works, as all the leading features of history will be carefully preserved, although the speculative opinions relative to petty princes, and the wearisome details of war and political intrigue, will be but briefly noticed; while all that makes historical reading objectionable in families, or unattractive or unintelligible to youth, will be avoided. The history of any one country will not be extended beyond two parts; several will occupy only one: but each country will be complete in itself, and every three or four parts will form one handsome volume, containing from six to eight highly-finished steel engravings, representing the most interesting incidents of the narrative, which will be enlivened by amusing authentic anecdotes.

THE JUVENILE HISTORICAL LIBRARY will be well adapted for School and Family reading, on account of its brevity, its simplicity, its propriety of language, and its truth.

The First Six Parts will appear in the following order :

COLONIAL

AND

MAGAZINE

Commercial-Maritime Journal

OF

THE BRITISH EMPIRE;

INCLUDING OUR POSSESSIONS IN THE EAST AND WEST INDIES, NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA, ASIA, AUSTRAL-ASIA, AFRICA, AND EUROPE.

EDITED BY

ROBERT MONTCOMERY MARTIN, ESQ.

AUTHOR OF THE "HISTORY OF THE BRITISH COLONIES," &c.

Ar a period when the extension of Manufactures and Commerce is eagerly regarded as one of the most efficient means of increasing individual wealth, and of promoting general prosperity, and when England not only finds the markets of Europe closing against British productions, but those who were heretofore our customers becoming our rivals in the supply of goods of which we hitherto possessed a monopoly,-at such a period, it becomes an imperative duty to investigate, calmly and accurately, the transition state through which England is now passing, in order that we may understand the basis on which the stability of the British empire is founded, and ascertain the means by which it may be preserved and improved.

With this national object in view, the COLONIAL MAGAZINE AND COMMERCIAL-MARITIME JOURNAL has been founded : its aim is

1st. To make known the incalculable importance, political, mercantile, and social, of our possessions in the East and West Indies, America, Austral-Asia, Africa, &c. &c.

2nd. To investigate the most valuable positions for the establishment of New Colonies, for the location of emigrants from the mother country, and for the profitable investment of capital.

3rd. To point out new markets for the extension of British Commerce, and for the supply of those raw materials on which the cheap and certain production of our staple manufactures depend.

4th. To examine into the treaties now in existence between foreign nations and England; the rates of duty levied on various commodities, and to procure a real reciprocity of trade with continental Europe.

5th. To record the proceedings of Missionary efforts, and aid in extending the blessings of a christianized civilization to the most distant regions of the earth.

6th. Reviews of New Publications, Books of Travels, &c. ; Colonial News, Monthly Price Current, State of the Funds and Markets, Obituary, &c.

Colonists of every class, at home and abroad-emigrants-rich and poor-merchants, shopowners, and traders-all who possess friends or relatives in the Colonies-and the politician who desires to ascertain the actual state of each Colony,-will find ample and authentic intelligence, arranged and classified under distinct departments. No expense or pains will be spared to make the COLONIAL MAGAZINE AND COMMERCIAL-MARITIME JOURNAL one of the most valuable and popular periodicals in the British Empire.

ADVERTISEMENTS.

The highly respectable and inquiring class of readers amongst whom the Colonial Magazine will circulate, must render it an extremely advantageous medium for Advertisements. Persons desirous of availing themselves of the extensive gratis distribution of No. 1, are requested to forward their Advertisements for it not later than Dec. 15th.
