THE SOCIAL GAZETTE; a Journal of

Public and Domestic Economy, and Municipal, Parochial, and Family Newspaper. 6d. stamped for circulation free of postage.-Published every Wednesday.

The title of the SOCIAL GAZETTE may sufficiently indicate the nature of its contents. It will be a journal of news, politics, and literature, expressly devoted to the great and sacred cause of Social Improvement on Christian Principles.

The Conductors of the SOCIAL GAZETTE are attached members of the Church of England; but it is as little their wish, as it can be their interest, to hide or disparage the efforts of other bodies. Their object is rather to shew to all what is done by all; since no right estimate can ever be formed, and no generous emulation can ever be excited, unless all instrumentalities, and all their operations, are fairly taken into account. (11)

The SOCIAL GAZETTE will be published every Wednesday, by John W. Parker, at 445, West Strand, where Communications for the Editor (post paid), Books and Prints for Review, and Advertisements, are received. But Orders for the GAZETTE need not be sent direct to the Publisher, as every Newsman in Town or Country will regularly supply it.

ECLECTIC REVIEW.

THE NEW SERIES of the ECLECTIC

REVIEW was commenced in January, 1837. Four volumes are now completed, and the Editor respectfully refers to them in evidence of the fulfilment of his pledges on undertaking the conduct of this long-established journal. He has increased its size by the addition of nearly two sheets, and has been happily successful in combining in it a greater degree and variety of literary talent than had previously been engaged. In his applications for literary aid to various gentlemen distinguished in their respective departments, he has received gratifying assurances of the growing respect in which his journal is held, while the greatly-extended circulation it has obtained has encouraged him to proceed in a liberal expenditure, with a view to its still further improvement.

It is the determination of the Editor to render the Eclectic a worthy and able advocate of those great priciples which lie at the foundation of religious fredom, and the profession of which has constituted the strength and glory of the Protestant Dissenters of this country. On this fact

tary Christianity, by whatever name they may guished. The present state of ecclesiastical affairs throughout Great Britain and its dependencies renders it of the utmost importance that the only organs of genera! literature which bases its opposition to a State Church on a murely religious principle, should be maintained in an efficient and commanding position. A large proportion ef the periodical literature of the country is in the hands of is evinced towards this monstrous creation of political the friends of a State Church; and, even where hostility craft, such hostility is usually founded on other consider tions than those which are uppermost in the minds of religious voluntaries.

Under these circumstances, the Editor of the Eclect Review respectfully solicits for his Journal an increased measure of public support. He asks distinctly for introduction into the families of the more opulent Dissenters. as that to which it is righteously entitled, and witho which it cannot be permanently maintained in an efficient

state.

To Episcopalian and Presbyterian voluntaries—a rapidly increasing and most influential section of the community he makes the same appeal, and pledges himself, in reters for their support, to spare no labour or expense which may be requisite to constitute his Journal as efficient as it will ever prove a zealous expounder and advocate of their com mon principles.

The January number commences a new volume, and will contain, with several other articles, one on "The Proceedings and Position of the Dissenters," and another on "The Intolerance of the Episcopal Church."

The January Number contains

lished on the 1st of every month, price 3s. 6d. Independently of a succession of original papers on innumerable interesting subjects, personal narratives, correspondence, anecdotes, &c. each number comprises biographical memoirs of eminent officers, reviews of new publications, either immediately relating to the Army and

Navy or involving subjects of utility or interest to the members of either; full reports of trials by Courts-Martial, distribution of the Army and Navy, promotions, appointments, &c.; with all the Naval and Military intelligence of the month.

"This is confessedly one of the ablest and most attractive periodicals of which the British press can boast: presenting a wide field of entertainment to the general, as well as the professional reader. The suggestions for the benefit of the two services are numerous, and distinguished by vigour of sense, acute and practical observation, and an ardent love of discipline, tempered by a high sense of justice, honour, humanity, and a tender regard for the welfare and personal comfort of our soldiers and seamen." GLOBE.
