MR. PROUT'S NEW WORK.

and

LIGHT HINTS on SHADOW, COMPOSITION, &c. as applicable to Landscape Painting Twenty Plates, containing Eighty-three Examples, executed in the present improved method of Two Tints. By SAMUEL PROUT, Esq. F.S.A. Painter in Water Colours in Ordinary to her Majesty. Imperial 4to. cloth lettered, 2. 2s.

The Hints on Light and Shadow and Composition have been thrown together divested of all technical difficulties, which but too often form insuperable hindrances to the progress of inquirers in art. It is an attempt to convey instruction in the plainest language; and as precept only

goes but a little way towards proficiency, twenty sheets of

examples are subjoined, not only as auxiliary lessons for practice, but to confirm the learner in an acquaintance with the necessary rules for, what is commonly termed, making a picture.

The author has endeavoured to explain the principles of his practice, and to point out the result of his experience.

The student too frequently finds barriers on the very threshold of his studies, over which he hesitates to proceed, discovering at the outset of his pursuit much which appears perplexing and unfathomable. The object, therefore, has been to remove those difficulties, and to offer a few simple rules, which may be easily comprehended, and when once acquired can never be forgotten. (4884)

"And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran. And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillow, and lay down in that place to sleep. And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it."-GENESIS, Xxviii. 10-12.

AGLIO'S PORTRAIT of the QUEEN,

in HER ROYAL ROBES, is published this day, engraved in the richest mezzotinto, by JAMES SCOTT. Size, First Proofs on India Paper, with Autograph, £3. 3s. 19 inches by 26 high.-Prints, 1. 1s.; Proofs, 2. 2s. ;

"We have not seen the original of the very fine engraving which Mr. Boys, of Golden Square, has just published; but if it be as rich in tone and colour as the print_would make us believe it is, Mr. Aglio has succeeded in effecting a very noble work of art. The likeness of the Queen is unquestionably one of the best we have seen: and gains in dignity and queenlike air from the position which her Majesty occupies amid all the accessories of regal state. The artist has dressed her in the robes of state, and placed about her the insignia of royalty. The flowing train, which has presented so much difficulty in other pictures, is admirably managed. It is seen in due luxuriance, but it is so well disposed of, that it does not hang upon the dress and encumber the figure. The mezzotinto engraving of Mr. James Scott is rich and warm. It gives life and force to the portrait, and seems to carry out the ideas of the painter in the happiest manner." MORNING POST, August 2.

"This portrait, a full-length, has higher pretensions than almost any of the likenesses of her Majesty that have yet appeared, which it far surpasses in general arrange ment and effect of art. The draperies of the picture are all well designed, and boldly executed." MORNING HERALD, August 10.

likeness to the Royal Original; and, if only for the great "It is a full-length, the face remarkable for its great resemblance to her Majesty, is likely to become exceedingly popular."-TORCH. (4895)

PARLEY'S TALES ABOUT ANIMALS.

TALES ABOUT ANIMALS. BY PETER

PARLEY. 7th Edition, greatly enlarged, 1 very large vol. square 16mo. beautifully printed by Whittingham, and embellished by 500 Cuts, 7s. 6d. neatly bound.

"That the gratitude of the Publishers might in some measure keep pace with the patronage which they received from the Public, additions and improvements were introduced into each former reprint of Parley Tales about Animals;' but in the present Edition far greater exertions have been made to render the work worthy of its widely-spread reputation. The number of articles is nearly doubled, the quantity of letterpress is more than doubled, and upwards of 200 new Woodcuts have been added. Care has also been taken to make the volume accord as much as possible with its title of Tales about Animals,' and to give it a tendency to inspire in the minds of the young a spirit of mercy and kindness towards the brute creation." (4897)

Printed for Thomas Tegg and Son, Cheapside; and may be procured, by order, of every Bookseller in the United Kingdom.
