WILSON'S NEW FRENCH SCHOOL DICTIONARY.

FRENCH and ENGLISH, and ENGLISH and FRENCH SCHOOL DICTIONARY. By the Rev. JOSEPH WILSON, late Professor of French in St. Gregory's College. Pocket size, 5s. bound and lettered.

In the compilation of this Dictionary, no labour has been spared to render it complete in every desirable particular. The plan has been adopted, after a careful examination of the Dictionaries already in existence; whatever was deemed excellent in each has been freely followed, while their numerous deficiencies have been supplied, and their superfluities retrenched. The details of the work have been most laboriously attended to, the genders of the French nouns have been vigilantly examined, the English accentuation is marked, the definitions and their inflections have been accurately distinguished, and a multitude of professional and technical phrases are introduced. The Vocabularies, christian, mythological, historical, and geographical, are rendered almost indispens able by the increasing intercourse of the French with other nations; and it is believed this Dictionary will be found the most comprehensive of all the small editions before the public. reign of King Charles II., with a Glossary of Military VALPY'S ELEMENTS of MYTHOLOGY;

Terms of the Middle Ages. By SAMUEL RUSH MEYRICK,
LL.D. and F.S.A., Advocate in the Ecclesiastical and
Admiralty Courts. 3 vols. folio, handsomely half-bound
morocco, £7.7s. First published at £24.

***This splendid Work furnishes the clearest explana- VA

tion of the origin, progress, and decline of the various systems of warfare through successive ages, and is admirably calculated to throw a new light upon the attrac

tive pages of Hume, Robertson, Gibbon, Mitford, Roscoe,

and Hallam, and even of Shakspeare. It will also serve to illustrate the beautiful productions of Sir Walter Scott, as the crusader and the courtly knight have prominent places in the historical descriptions of Dr. Meyrick. After a brief account of the rise and progress of warfare, and the use of arms among the ancient nations, the armour and the weapons are minutely described as they existed in England from the Norman Conquest down to Charles II. The descriptions are accompanied by a numerous assemblage of exquisite engravings, inlaid with gold and siver, and coloured in a style of peculiar delicacy. Many of them display the figures of knights and heroes on horseback, in full armour, with the weapons they used, and with the horses splendidly caparisoned, as they appeared in the tournament or the field of battle. The initial letters of the chapters are richly illuminated, in the manner

W KIDD'S POPULAR PUBLICATIONS.

· "We cannot," says one of our leading Reviewers, "but regard Mr. KIDD as the MOST Successful of modern Publishers; and when we take into consideration the immense number, as well as the great and interesting (we may add, extraordinary) variety of the publications-no two of them being in any way alike-that have emanated from his fertile pen, we know not which to admire most, his tact or his talent....The handsome manner in which the respective books are got up, and the low prices at which they are issued, effectually prevent competition, both at home and abroad, and prove their proprietor to be 'an able General' in every sense of the word....Mr. KIDD has courted popularity, and he has long since obtained it in (we believe) every quarter of the globe.”

** W. KIDD'S NEW CATALOGUE of more than 200 CHOICE BOOKS is now ready, and may be had of the Proprietor, W. KIDD, 7, Tavistock Street, Covent Garden; or of W. M. CLARK, 17, Warwick Lane, Paternoster Row. Being printed on a single sheet, it can be forwarded to any part of England at the cost of a single postage.
