The Proprietors of the Pictorial Bible' have been induced to undertake a Quarto Edition (to correspond with Mant and D'Oyly's, Scott's, and other Bibles) at the urgent request of many Correspondents, who are anxious that the Notes, whose value has been universally recog nized as forming in themselves a Library for the Religious Student, should be printed in a larger type. The text is, of course, proportionately larger. The alterations in this Edition are limited to a few Corrections, the Engravings will be the same, and the impressions in every respect as excellent as those of the Original Edition. (2087)

WORKS IN PREPARATION,

BY MESSRS. LONGMAN AND Co.

DR. URE has for a considerable period been

engaged on "A DICTIONARY of ARTS, MANUFACTURES, and MINING," which is now in the press, and will form 1 very thick volume, 8vo. illustrated by a large number of Engravings on Wood, and is intended as a companion to Mr. M'Culloch's "Dictionary of Commerce and Commercial Navigation." (2136)

DICTIONARY of SCIENCE, LITERATURE, and ART, including all the Technical Terms in common use-a work which has long been a desideratum-is now in the press, after several years' preparation. In reading, or in conversation, subjects are frequently discussed, and terms used, with which few persons are familiar: at the present period, too, when science has become of such universal interest, and when new inventions, founded on scientific principles, are almost every week brought under the notice of the public, a work wherein may be found information on all subjects, entirely to be relied upon, cannot fail to become extensively popular. This work is in fact intended to be a condensed and improved Cyclopædia, containing sufficently extended information on all subjects, adapted for immediate use; each department being undertaken by gentlemen whose names will be a sufficient guarantee for their accuracy. The following gentlemen are engaged in this work:

Professor Brande, in Chemistry and all branches of
Natural Philosophy connected with it;

T. Galloway, Esq. in Mathematics, Mechanics, and all branches of Physics dependent on mathematical principles;

Joseph Gwilt, Esq. in Architecture, Music, and the Fine Arts;

Dr. Lindley, in Botany;

J. C. Loudon, Esq. in Gardening and Agriculture; J. R. M'Culloch, Esq. in all branches of General Literature;

Herman Merivale, Esq. in Law; and

Richard Owen, Esq. Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, in Comparative Anatomy and General Zoology.

[blocks in formation]

DR. LINDLEY is about to publish a

"FLORA MEDICA, or a Botanical Account of all the most remarkable Plants applied to Medical Practice in Great Britain and other Countries." The work will embrace the medicinal uses for which the plants are known, careful descriptions of them, an investigation of the evidence upon which officinal substances have been assigned to particular species, and an adjustment of the nomenclature to the most correct botanical standard. The work will be so numbered as to be capable of use as a Catalogue of the Medical Plants cultivated in Botanical Gardens, and printed in such a manner that the sequence of the matter may be varied at the pleasure of the reader. MR. T. E. TOMLINS' “ POPULAR LAW

DICTIONARY, with New Tables of Descent and Consanguinity," will appear very shortly. This book is intended to illustrate the practical application of the law, as it now stands, to the concerns of the unprofessional reader, and without entering into disputed cases, to demonstrate the general principles to which most acts of a legal nature have reference. It has been thought most expedient that a work of this kind should follow the arrangement of a Dictionary, as on ordinary occasions, or emergencies, the reader can be readily directed to the required information; while, on the other hand, the desultory reader may be induced to form a closer acquaintance with a species of knowledge, the want of which is often productive of loss and uneasiness. The work will be divested of technicalities, except in places where rendered absolutely necessary, and then they are carefully explained-the public, not the legal profession, being the parties to whom this work is addressed. Although controverted opinions have been carefully avoided, no position has been advanced which is not supported by acknowledged authorities. The whole has been carefully revised, with reference to its legal accuracy, by an eminent Barrister. 1 thick vol. Svo. (2139)

A Specimen of the work may be procured of any

Bookseller.

MR. LISTER'S LIFE of EDWARD,

lished, will be published at the end of the month.

MR. HUDSON, of the Legacy Duty Office,

Somerset House, who has just published "Plain Directions for Making Wills," according to the New Act which came into force at the beginning of the present year, is engaged on a work of similar character, on The DUTIES of EXECUTORS and ADMINISTRATORS." This also is intended to be a work of an entirely popular character, containing information on every point necessary to be known by Executors, communicated in the plainest manner; the object being to enable persons undertaking that office to act with perfect security, without the necessity, in most cases, of employing a Solicitor.

(2146)

New Volume, by Mr. MAUNDER, on the plan of his "Treasury of Knowledge," entitled "THE BIOGRAPHICAL TREASURY," &c. &c. containing about TEN THOUSAND MEMOIRS of EMINENT PERSONS of all Ages and Countries, brought down to the present time, will appear during the month. Independent of the Lives," there are about 3500 Maxims and Precepts, arranged in a similar manner to those in the preceding Work. (2147)
